The women's soccer team fell by a score of 2-1 to Eastern Kentucky at Titan Field on Sunday after the Colonels scored 44 seconds into the game and added another tally before the half.
Freshman
Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year for UDM (3-3-3) at 76:41 of the second half. McCollum's shot from about 12 yards out on the right side beat the Eastern Kentucky (3-4-2) goalkeeper as the Titans tried to start a second half comeback.
Detroit held a 15-4 overall shooting advantage, including a 12-1 edge in the second frame. Despite controlling most of the possession in today's contest, the Titans' eight shots on net did not result in the elusive second goal.
“In the second half we put a lot of pressure on them and we scored a goal, but we just couldn't get the tying goal. When you're down 2-0 and you're chasing the other team though, it's difficult to get back into it,” said head coach
Mike Lupenec. “We made some mistakes early and they took advantage of them and they should get credit for that.”
EKU managed only three shots on goal, but two of those went in before the second half started after defensive miscues by the Titans.
“I told the girls before the game that this team was going to battle coming in here. I felt going into this game from our Friday's  performance against Central Michigan that we could build on that and get a victory before conference play starts,” added Lupenec.
Freshman goalkeeper
Emily Oberheim (Springfield, VA/Lee) made one save playing the second half for Detroit.
The next action for the Titans will be the first Horizon League game of the season as host Valparaiso next Sunday, Sept. 26, at Titan Field. Game time is set for noon.
