CLEVELAND, Ohio-- Host Cleveland State ran its home winning streak to 11 straight this season with an 81-69 win over the Detroit Titans at the Wolstein Center on Thursday night. UDM led with under eight minutes to go, but a 15-1 run sealed it for the Vikings.
What was a fast-paced game in the opening half turned into a physical affair in the second 20 minutes. The teams combined for 35 personal fouls in the second half alone and nine players had at least four fouls as the game slowed after halftime. Detroit (10-10, 4-4 Horizon League) gave away too many opportunities from the free throw line, making just 7-of-16 shots in the second half. Conversely, CSU (17-3, 6-2) got to the line 30 times after the break and nearly half of its point total in the half came from the line (20 of 42).
It was a furious pace to start the game as both teams tried to get up and down the floor. Detroit's only make in its first nine shots was a putback two-handed dunk by
Nick Minnerath.
Eli Holman's lefty hook ended a 9-2 CSU run and sparked a 10-2 Titan run to give them their first lead, 12-11. Detroit's effort off-the-glass was key in the run with Detroit holding a 14-5 rebounding advantage at the second media timeout and having eight of its first 12 points on second-chance opportunities.
The Vikings made 4-of-6 triple tries in the early going, helping them rebuild a nine-point lead with eight minutes left in the first half and CSU held a 39-32 lead at the break. That advantage quickly dwindled in the second half. Minnerath fired down a vicious dunk on the fastbreak and added a layup on the next trip.
Ray McCallum kept up the frantic pace with a quick bucket to trim the lead down to a single point, 44-43, before the first media break.
A few moments later, Minnerath's reverse lay-in gave the Titans their first lead of the second half. Each possession was fiercely contested in the second half and both teams reached the double bonus with plenty of time remaining.
The back-breaking stretch came after Detroit held a slim 60-59 advantage. The Vikings would score 15 of the next 16 points and earned their largest lead at 74-61. Detroit never recovered from that run and CSU improved to 11-0 on its home floor.
Holman had his ninth double-double of the season with his 16 points and 14 rebounds. Minnerath added 16 points and seven rebounds and McCallum tallied 11 points and four assists.
Horizon League-leading scorer Norris Cole had 18 points and 11 assists for CSU. Trevon Harmon had a game-high 22 points.
UDM will remain in Ohio and will face Youngstown State on Saturday. Tip time is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Notes: Detroit returned to its most-used starting five (Simon, McCallum, Calliste, Minnerath, Holman) ... It was Holman's 20th double-double of his career ... Minnerath has scored 16+ points in four of his last six games.
