CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) registered her second-straight double-double and UDM nearly erased an 18-point first half deficit, but the Titans could not complete the comeback as Detroit was topped by Cleveland State, 61-51, on Thursday night at the Wolstein Center.
Shayok collected a season-high 15 boards to go with 11 points. Sophomore
Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) had a team-high 16 points along with a career-best seven rebounds and three steals, while sophomore
Cherridy Thornton (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) added 10 markers.
Cleveland State (11-7, 4-3 HL) jumped out to an 18-6 advantage eight minutes into the game and eventually led by as many as 18, 29-11, with 4:45 left in the first half, before Detroit (8-9. 2-4 HL) cut the deficit to 12 at the half, 30-18.
The Titans continued to chip away getting CSU's lead to under double digits at the 15:13 mark in the second half as Shayok connected on 1-of-2 from the line to put the score at 33-24. Detroit would be within nine on two other occasions before Thornton nailed her first 3-pointer of the game to get UDM within six, 38-32 with 10:52 left in the contest.
The Vikings ran their lead back to nine, but Detroit responded with five straight points, the last three on another Thornton trey, to move within just four points, 41-37. Detroit then had two opportunities to get closer as the defense forced a CSU turnover and a missed field goal, but the Titans could not take advantage missing both of their shot attempts, both 3-pointers.
After a Cleveland State bucket, Shayok got inside for a layup to again make it a four-point game, 43-39 with 5:48 left, but that was as close as the Titans would get as the home team pushed its lead back up to double digits with three minutes to go.
The Titan defense forced 22 turnovers, including 13 in the second half, and came away with 12 steals.
Game Notes:
The 18 first half points were the lowest for the Titans in any half this season and the lowest since Detroit had 18 at Butler last year…Only two Titans scored in the first half as Dixon had 11 and Shayok had 7…Dixon netted double digits on the road for the seventh time in her 10 road games on the year…It was the third game in a row, and the fourth in the last five games, that the Titan defense forced 20+ turnovers…It was also the seventh-straight contest with 10+ steals…CSU's Shawnita Garland had a game-high 33 points, the highest by an opponent against UDM this season…It was also the first 30-point game against Detroit since CSU's Katie Klein had 32 against Detroit last year in Cleveland.
