YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Four Titans netted double figures in scoring and Detroit played some great defense down the stretch as the red, white and blue ended a three-game slide with a 66-57 victory over Youngstown State at the Beeghly Center on Saturday evening.
Sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) led the way with her third straight double-double, and the fourth in her last five games, as the Titan forward had 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. It was also the 16th double-double in her career.
“Yar had a great game,” said head coach
Autumn Rademacher. “I know that she wants to win and that has really affected her in these last few games. She knew it was going to be a battle with Brown (Brandi). Both of them were finalist for the Newcomer of the Year last year and I knew she took that as a personal challenge. I wanted her to get some good touches inside and she really responded.”
Sophomore
Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) had 15 points and four rebounds, while junior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) and sophomore
Cherridy Thornton (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) had 13 apiece. Thornton also added eight boards, while Jones had four caroms and four assists.
Detroit (9-9, 3-4 HL) led by one, 45-44, when the Titans went on a 9-2 spurt to put some distance between them and Youngstown State (3-16, 1-7 HL). Shayok started the scoring with a layup, while 3-pointers by Dixon and Thornton along with a free throw by freshman
Senee Shearer (Detroit, MI/Pershing) accounted for the UDM output.
The Titans kept its lead at eight when YSU, just like they did all game, came back to nearly wipe away the Detroit lead cutting it to three, 55-52, with just over eight minutes to go. Dixon and Shayok had baskets to put it back to seven, but a Penguin try once again trimmed it to a four-point lead, 59-55, with 5:48 left.
The home team was able to get within four on one more occasion, 61-57, but that is when Detroit put the game away holding Youngstown State scoreless for the last 3:34, as YSU was 0-for-7 from the field with two turnovers during that span.
“I tell the team this everyday that every game is going to be a battle, especially on the road,” said head coach Autumn Rademacher. “Brandi Brown is a good player and they made some key three-point shots, but we were able to make some free throws and get some key baskets down the stretch.”
The Titans opened the game on a 9-2 run, scoring seven straight at one point, and never trailed in the contest with just two ties early in the first half.
Detroit maintained its seven-point lead for the next few possessions, but Youngstown State answered with nine straight points to knot the contest at 13-all midway through the first half. UDM had an offensive response of its own as Jones and sophomore connected on 3-pointers to give Detroit a six-point lead.
YSU cut the Detroit advantage to one, 19-18, and had the ball looking to take the lead, but the Titan defense forced a miss and Detroit quickly ran its lead up to seven, 29-22, before taking a 31-26 lead into the locker room.
UDM upped its lead to nine again three times early in the second stanza, the latest at 39-30 three minutes into play, but the Penguins refused to let Detroit run away with it as they once again cut it to a one-point game, 45-44, with 13:07 left.
Detroit outrebounded Youngstown State, 39-29, on the day and held the Penguins to 36 percent shooting, including just 29 percent from behind the arc. The Titans shot
Detroit will be back in the Motor City for a pair of Horizon League games next week, starting on Thursday as Jesuit rival Loyola visits Calihan Hall. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
