DETROIT --Sophomore
Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) caused the crowd to erupt with a three to send it to overtime, but the Titans could not finish the comeback in the extra session as Detroit was tripped up by Loyola, 88-77, on Thursday evening at Calihan Hall.
The Titans (9-10, 3-5 HL) used a relentless rebounding effort to send the game into overtime grabbing three offensive boards in the last 25 seconds, before Dixon nailed a three to tie the game at 71-all. Dixon started the three-point barrage by missing a three and getting her own rebound.
Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) then missed a three, but
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) collected the board. She would pass it to sophomore
Cherridy Thornton, (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) who launched a trey of her own that missed, but again corralled by Shayok who kicked it out to Dixon for the game-tying shot.
Four Titans scored in double figures led by Dixon's game-high 27. She also tied her career-best with seven rebounds and three steals. It was her fourth game of the year with 20+ points and the first at home this season.
Shayok posted her fourth-straight double with 14 points and 15 rebounds, tying her season high for the second time in three games. Murphy tied her career-high with 13 markers and tallied a career-best five steals, while Thornton finished with 12 points.
Detroit was down by 18, 60-42, with 10:48 left in the game when the Titans came to life closing the half on a 29-11 charge to tie the game.
The Titans went on a 13-4 run to cut it to a nine-point game, 64-55, with 6:47 left. Murphy started the spurt with a steal, feeding it to Dixon for the layup. Murphy would later add a three, while Thronton netted a pair of baskets.
Loyola (9-10, 3-5 HL) pushed its advantage back to double digits taking a 69-59 lead with 3:47 left, but Detroit would not quit. Junior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) hit a layup and Murphy stole the ball off the inbound pass and was fouled and made the pair from the charity stripe. A three-point attempt from Dixon was good and closed the Titans within the final three and down 69-66 with 1:40 remaining.
A Ramblers' layup pushed the lead up two more points and Dixon followed with another two-point bucket to keep Detroit within three and 46 seconds left on the clock. The offensive frenzy that followed led to Dixon making the three-pointer that equaled Loyola's total and push the game to overtime.
It was a Rambler team that shot 6-of-7 in the overtime period and 17 points in the extra frame that was the final thorn in the side for the red, white and blue.
It was a seesaw affair at the start as both Detroit and Loyola traded the lead six times, while the contest was tied on six other occasions. Thornton paced the offense early with a couple of 3-pointers, and Detroit had a three-point lead, 29-26, with 4:58 left in the half when the Ramblers went on a 12-0 run to jump out in front by nine, 38-29.
The Titans would trim the deficit to six at the break, 38-32, thanks to some late free throws.
Loyola led by six, 40-34, early in the second stanza when the Ramblers took charge with a 20-8 run during a nine-minute span to increase its advantage to 18, 60-42, midway through the half.
The game was part of the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight, which uses basketball to raise awareness of Jesuit education. The match-up is one of more than 90 games this season between men's and women's teams from the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities across the United States.
