PONTIAC, Mich. -- The Detroit men's lacrosse team prepared for its season opener with a pair of scrimmages on Saturday as the Titans defeated Kenyon (Ohio), 11-5, and Carthage (Wisc.), 12-2, at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.
“It was a good day all around,” said head coach
Matt Holtz. “Everybody that was healthy played so we got to see a lot of guys go out there in game situations. This was a tune-up and I think the guys understand that we need to keep working and get ready for next week.”
The Titan offense saw 12 players net goals on the day, led by redshirt freshman
Wes Steen's (Columbus, OH/Olentangy Liberty) six. Freshman
Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) had four goals and two assists, while senior
Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) tallied three and junior
Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) added two.
“Wes and Alex really stood out, but we had a lot of guys score and play well today,” added Holtz.
Detroit used all three goalies and they all played well allowing just seven goals in the two games. The defense was strong too and Detroit got great play from their two main LSM's in senior
Tim Shoemaker (Rochester, MI/Rochester) and
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary).
“I was happy with the play of all three goalies,” said Holtz. “Our defense was great, especially the play of our LSM's. They both played out of their minds.”
Detroit will have one more week of practice before opening the season at Delaware next Saturday.
