DETROIT -- The Detroit women's basketball team got off to a fast start and never looked back as the Titans cruised to a 68-52 win over Valparaiso on Thursday.

The win moved UDM to 8-6 overall (2-1 Horizon League) and a perfect 5-0 at home, while Valparaiso fell to 3-11, 0-2 in conference play.

Sophomore Cherridy Thornton (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) led four Titans in double figures with 18 points, including a career-high five 3-pointers.

“It was good for her,” said head coach Autumn Rademacher. “We know that she is able to make shots and she was able to step up. She was very patient. She let the offense come to her and let other people create and she was in the right spot at the right time and knocked them down.”

Sophomore Yar Shayok(Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) recorded her third double-double of the year with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She also had a season-high four assists.Junior Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists, while junior Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) posted a season-high 12 points.

Thornton set a career high with five three-pointers, all in the first half, and had nine of the first 11 Titan points helping Detroit jump out to an 11-2 run in the first 4:11 of the game.

Thornton hit three more shots from long distance and Murphy added two others while Shayok had a pair of inside buckets to put Detroit up 24-9 with 7:39 left. Thornton had 12 of Detroit's first 19 points.

The Titans forced 11 Crusader turnovers in the first half and capitalized on their chances scoring 19 points off those miscues.

Detroit shot 5-of-9 (56%) from 3-point range in the first 11 minutes and finished the first half 7-of-15 (47%) heading into the locker room with a 36-21 advantage.

The second half saw Valparaiso start out with a 8-4 run in the first four minutes to close to within 11 points, 40-29, but Detroit put any hopes of a comeback away after that with an 11-2 spurt to go up by 19, 51-32. During that run, sophomore Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) hit another Detroit trey, while Murphy added four points as well as a bucket apiece for Shayok and Allen.

Valparaiso would never get within single digits of the lead the rest of the game.

Junior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) added six assists, four rebounds and four steals in the contests. As a team, Detroit had a season-best 22 assists on its 24 field goals.
