TOLEDO – The men's cross country team tied Youngstown State for 27
th place at the 2011 NCAA Great Lakes Region Championships. The Titans recorded 832 points on Saturday at the Ottawa Park Golf Course.
Edwin Gay was the first Titan to cross the finish line. He finished 155
th overall.
Wisconsin was the overall winner of the meet with 50 points. The Badgers had a pack of athletes finish side-by-side claiming spots 8-12. Indiana and Michigan rounded out the top three. The Hoosiers had three runners place in the top ten, and Michigan's Craig Forys finished third overall to lead the Wolverines.
Butler represented the Horizon League well with a sixth place finish. The Bulldogs had the overall winner as Callum Hawkins completed the 10k race in 30:01.5.
Wright State and Milwaukee finished right in front of Detroit and Youngstown State. The Raiders ended the meet with 718 points for 25
th overall and Milwaukee recorded 817 for 26
th. Other Horizon League schools finishing near Detroit included Valparaiso (29
th) and Green Bay (30
th)
Junior
Edwin Gay was the top Titan on Saturday afternoon placing 155
th overall with a time of 33:40. His mile pace was 5:25 (Splits 2k; 6:22, 4k: 13:03, 6k: 19:55, 8k: 26:54).
The pack of
Erik Westbrook,
Ylli Alla and
Martin Nelkie ran well for Detroit. Westbrook clocked in at 33:45 for 158
th place while Alla and Nelkie finished in 164
th and 166
th respectively. Alla crossed the line at 33:55 and Nelkie was close behind at 34:00.
Saturday's meet marked the third Great Lakes Regional for senior
Bob Radlich. He finished 189
th overall with a time of 34:54.
The final two Titans in action on Saturday were freshmen
Colin Creagh and
Ryan Hofsess. Creagh started well but caught a cramp and therefore dropped to 197
th overall with a time of 35:31. Hofsess was also hit with a cramp during the race. He was unable to finish.
