AKRON, Ohio -- Junior
Chanahl Putnam (Almont, MI/Almont) netted 13 points – 11 in the second half – and the Titans cut a 16-point second-half deficit down to just three, but they could not get any closer as Detroit fell to Drexel, 61-56, on Friday night in the Preseason WNIT consolation round. The game was played at Akron's James A Rhodes Arena.
Freshman
Shareta Brown (Grand Blanc, MI/Grand Blanc) had a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds, while junior
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) recorded nine points and seven boards.
The Titans were down by four, 21-17, with 7:20 left in the first when Drexel ended the half on a 10-0 run to go up by double-digits. The run continued coming out of the intermission as the Dragons netted the first basket to go up by 16, 33-17.
That was when the Titans came to life scoring 11-straight points to get within five. Putnam had five points during that spurt, while Brown had two points and two assists. Senior
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) and Shayok also had a bucket during that key run.
Drexel maintained its lead though and went back up by 10, 42-32, when a Titan 9-2 run got the red, white and blue within three, 44-41. Junior
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) started that offensive charge with a 3-pointer, while Putnam also added a trey of her own. Brown capped off that comeback attempt with a layup and the Titans were down by just three with 8:34 left.
Showing no signs of quitting, Detroit made one last charge for the victory cutting the Dragons' advantage to four, 57-53, as senior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) drove to the rim, hit her layup and the free throw with 1:45 left.
With Drexel hitting its free throws in the final minute of play, the Dragons would hold on for the win.
Allen ended the game with seven points, three assists and two rebounds, while Jones totaled three points, four assists and four boards.
The Titans shot 50% in the second stanza (15-of-30), led by Putnam's 4-of-7 effort, which included three 3-pointers. Detroit also dished out 17 assists and came away with seven steals.
The game started with the Titans jumping out to an 11-4 lead just three minutes into the contest. Drexel then scored 13 straight to take a lead it would never give back.
The Titans will now await the outcome of Akron-Howard, with the Titans facing the loser of that game on Saturday. If it's against Howard, the game will be at 5:00 p.m., while a match-up with Akron will tip-off at 7:30.
Game Notes:
It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools…With her nine rebounds, Shayok is now seventh in Detroit history with 638 career rebounds…Freshman
