INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- Shelvin Mack scored a game-high 32 points to lift host Butler to a 66-51 win over Detroit in front of a crowd of 9,004 at Hinkle Fieldhouse Saturday night. Mack outscored the Titans 24-17 in the second half as the Horizon League's Preseason Player of the Year led the Bulldogs to the season series sweep.
Butler (18-9, 10-5 HL) trailed at the half, 34-29, but the Titans' sluggish start to the second period and Mack's offensive punch spelled doom for Detroit (14-14, 8-8). It was a career effort for the senior guard as he helped put Butler into a tie for third place in the mungled HL standings.
Detroit carried the momentum for most of the first half after holding the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for the first 3:27. BU missed its first seven shots from the floor but UDM had just a 4-0 advantage. After four ties and four lead changes, Detroit got five straight points from
LaMarcus Lowe and later a three-point play from
Ray McCallum to grab a seven-point lead at 31-24. The stretch started with Lowe making a pair from the free throw line, then swatting a shot and converting a traditional three-point play. Detroit held the lead into the halftime locker room, 34-29.
Similar to Butler's slow start off the tip, Detroit did not score for the first 4:21 of the second half, allowing BU to regain the lead at 40-36. Meanwhile, Mack began to heat up, making a pair of threes-- part of his six triples on the night-- to lead the run.
Nick Minnerath dunked home an alley-oop and scored a layup, followed by a
Jason Calliste jumper for a 44-43 Titan lead. It would be the final Detroit lead of the night, however, as Butler embarked on a 17-4 run over the next seven minutes to take firm control. All told, UDM scored just seven points in the final 10:16 of the second half, helping the Dogs to the victory.
Mack's 32 points were a career high while Shawn Vanzant chipped-in a dozen for the Bulldogs. Minnerath and McCallum paced Detroit with 11 points apiece.
The Titans return home for their final regular season home game Wednesday against Youngstown State. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
