DETROIT -- Sophomore
Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) scored a team-high 15 points and sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) had 12 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season, but the Titans could not slow down Wright State as Detroit was downed, 75-55, on Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
The loss drops Detroit to 10-13 on the season and 4-8 in the Horizon League, while WSU moved to 15-8 overall and 8-4 in conference play.
“I think we missed a lot of open shots,” said head coach
Autumn Rademacher. “We had a structure on offense that allowed us to get some pretty good looks at the basket, but unfortunately we weren't able to knock them down.”
It was a back and forth affair to start the game as Wright State took a 12-10 lead just five minutes into the contest. There were three ties in that span, but Detroit was never able to get out in front.
From there, WSU pushed its lead to as many as 11 before heading into halftime with a 34-25 lead.
The Titans were able to get within seven, 34-27, early in the second stanza as junior
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) nailed a jumper at the 18:20 mark in the second half, but a 14-2 run by the Raiders raised the deficit to 20, 49-29, with 12:07 remaining.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Dixon ended that spurt and the Titans kept chopping away at the Wright State lead eventually getting within eight, 58-50, with six minutes to go. The Raiders pushed their advantage back to double digits, 61-50, but two free throws from freshman
Senee Shearer (Detroit, MI/Pershing) cut that to nine with 4:27 on the clock. That was as close as UDM would get as the visitors ended the game on a 14-3 tally.
Junior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) ended the game with eight points, three assists and two boards, while junior
Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) totaled seven markers and five rebounds.
Wright State shot 46 percent in the game and outrebounded Detroit, 49-38.
The Titans will play game two of their three-game homestand on Thursday as UDM host Youngstown State. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
