DETROIT-- The Titans closed-out their regular season home slate with a 91-79 victory over Youngstown State Wednesday night at Calihan Hall. Five different Detroit players were in double figures scoring, led by
Nick Minnerath's 24 points.
Minnerath was the catalyst early on, scoring 15 points in the first 10 minutes of the opening half. With the score 4-2 Detroit, Minnerath poured-in the next 10 straight Titan points and 15 of the next 19.
Three Minnerath free throws ended the personal stretch, then
Ray McCallum stepped in front of a pass and converted a reverse lay-up on the other end in the middle of a 12-4 Detroit run. Detroit (15-14, 9-8 Horizon League) held a comfortable 48-31 advantage at halftime.
Coming out of the break, UDM stretched its lead to as many as 23, but Youngstown (8-18, 2-14) got a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds from Damian Eargle and the Penguins refused to go away. YSU went to work on chipping away at the huge deficit and whittled it all the way down to nine with 2:17 remaining.
Chris Blake scored six points in the final two minutes and YSU got no closer, extending its league road-losing streak to 21 straight. The Penguins mustered just 7-of-35 (.200) from the three-point line in the loss.
Ray McCallum was two assists shy of a triple-double for Detroit in the win.
Chase Simon had 17, Blake added 15, while McCallum and
Eli Holman each had 14.
UDM will take to the road for its final pair of games beginning with the BracketBusters matchup at Drake Saturday. The regular season concludes at Wright State on Fri., Feb. 25.
