DETROIT -- Sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds and the Titan defense held Youngstown State to just 25 percent shooting as Detroit iced the Penguins for the sixth-straight time, 52-43, on Thursday evening at Calihan Hall.

Six Titans posted at least five boards in the game as the Titans grabbed a season-high 55 rebounds in dominating the glass by a 55-31 margin. Detroit (11-13, 5-8 HL) also held YSU (4-21, 2-12 HL) to just 15-of-60 from the field and 6-of-23 from behind the arc.

Sophomore Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) led Detroit with 12 points and six rebounds, while junior Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) had 11 points and five boards. Sophomore Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) netted 10 points and junior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) totaled six points and six rebounds in the win.

Detroit trailed by one, 41-40, with 7:26 left in the game, but just like the Titans did in Youngstown earlier this year, UDM rallied late ending the game on a 12-2 run to earn the victory. Dixon started the late spurt with sixth-straight points, while the defense did its part holding Youngstown State to 1-of-13 shooting in the final seven minutes of action.

After Youngstown State cut the Titan lead to three, 46-43, Fambro fought for a defensive rebound and took it all the way in for a layup to push the lead back to five with 2:15 left in the game. Murphy and Fambro then added a pair of free throws in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

Both teams started out a bit sluggish, but YSU was able to build a nine-point lead on two occasions, the latest at 16-7, 10 minutes into the first half. That is when the Titans' offense clicked for a 21-4 tally over the next six minutes to take a 28-20 advantage. Five Titans scored in that stretch, led by sophomore Cherridy Thornton's (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) five points, while Dixon, Fambro and Murphy added four apiece. The UDM defense also stepped up forcing YSU into missing 10 of its final 12 shots in the stanza as the red, white and blue went into the half up, 30-25.

Detroit extended its lead to as many as nine, 36-27, in the second half as Jones got inside for an acrobatic layup with 16:54 left, but UDM would then go the next seven minutes without scoring as the Penguins would eventually regain the lead until the final Titan charge.

The final game of this three-game homestand will take place on Saturday as the Titans welcome Cleveland State into the Motor City. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
