Postgame Interview On The Titan YouTube Channel
DETROIT -- Four Titans were in double figures and Detroit used a late 8-0 run to tie the score, but junior
Jalesa Jones' (Detroit, MI/Pershing) 3-point heave at the buzzer fell short as UDM dropped a 74-71 contest to Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Cherridy Thornton (Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior) led Detroit (11-14, 5-9 HL) with 17 points. Sophomore
Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) had 13, while junior
Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) and sophomore
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) netted 12 and 10, respectively.
Cleveland State (16-10, 9-6) was up by eight, 68-60, with just over five minutes left when the Titans made their final charge. Neither team actually scored for almost two minutes when Jones found Murphy open behind the arc and she connected on a 3-pointer.
The next time down the floor, Jones found Murphy again, this time inside the paint for a layup as she was fouled. Murphy would go on to hit the free throw to get Detroit within two. Dixon would then even things all up at 68 with 1:45 left as Jones stole the ball and found her streaking to the basket for an easy layup.
CSU would rebound to score six straight, but the Titans kept at it as Dixon nailed a three with six seconds left to cut the deficit to three, 74-71. UDM would then foul on the inbounds pass and after a Vikings' miss at the free-throw line, Jones took the ball and headed up the floor releasing her game-tying attempt at midcourt.
Along with her 10 points, Shayok totaled nine rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals. Jones tied her season-high with eight assists, while scoring five points, pulling down four boards and coming away with three steals. Sophomore
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) added eight points, five boards and two steals.
The Titans tied a school record for three-point attempts hitting 9-of-30 from long range. Overall, Detroit shot just under 40 percent on the day going 26-of-66 from the field (39.4%).
It was close game from the very start as neither team took more than a six-point lead in the first half. Detroit was down by six, 19-13, with 12:11 in the first stanza when UDM went on a 9-2 spurt to go ahead 22-21. Both teams then traded leads in the next few minutes, but the red, white and blue eventually opened a five-point advantage, 34-29, before taking a 39-35 lead at the break.
Detroit continued to stay in front at the start of the second half, but a 13-3 CSU run put the Vikings back on top, 53-48, with 13:11 left. UDM fought back to tie it all up at 55 and then again at 60, until Cleveland State opened the game's biggest lead, 68-60.
Detroit will hit the road for a pair of Horizon League games in Chicago next week, starting with a match-up against the UIC Flames on Thursday. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. (EST), at the UIC Pavilion.
