VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Eight Titans scored on the day, but a second-half run by Valparaiso proved to be the difference as Detroit was defeated by the Crusaders, 57-46, on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Sophomore Dominique Dixon (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) led the way with 12 points. Sophomore Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) had seven points and a season-high seven rebounds, while sophomore Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) added six points and a game-best 13 rebounds.

Detroit (10-12, 4-7 HL) looked like it would mount a second-half rally as the Titans cut a 10-point deficit down to just three with two minutes to go. Trailing by 10, 49-39, with 4:37 left, Fambro hit a jumper and after both teams went almost a minute without scoring, junior Britney Murphy (Saginaw, MI/Arthur Hill) came up with a steal and a bucket to trim the Valpo lead to six.

The Titan defense was able to get the ball back and Dixon was fouled attempting a 3-pointer and calmly stepped to the line connecting on all three from the charity stripe to make it a one-possession game. Detroit just could not get one more stop to try and tie it and the home team would end up netting the game's final eight points.

Murphy ended the contest with five points and a career-best six rebounds, while freshman Megan Hatter (Howell, MI/Howell) finished with six points.

The Titans jumped out to a 7-2 lead to start the game, thanks to five quick points from Hatter. Detroit continued to stay in front until Valparaiso (6-17, 3-8 HL) tied it at 16-all midway through the first half, but the red, white and blue responded with five-straight points to reclaim the lead.

Valpo answered with nine unanswered to go up by four, 25-21, but a three from freshman Senee Shearer (Detroit, MI/Pershing), a layup from junior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) and two free throws from Shayok sent UDM into the break up, 28-25.

The Titans opened the second half with back-to-back baskets in the first minute of play by Dixon and Shayok to extend their lead to seven points, 32-25. Detroit maintained its lead and was ahead by five, 36-31, with 13:48 left when the Crusaders went on a 16-0 run over the next seven minutes to open an 11-point advantage, 47-36.
