DETROIT -- The Detroit men's lacrosse team gave a spirited comeback effort in front of its home fans, but a Robert Morris goal in overtime was the difference as the Titans fell, 14-13, in their first overtime game in program history.
Junior
Tim Lehto (Farmington, MI/North Farmington) and freshman
Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris) each posted a hat trick and four points with three goals and an assist, while junior
Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) also finished with four points on a marker and three helpers. The three goals and four points matched Lehto's career best in both categories, while Harris' four assists topped his career high.
Detroit (1-7) trailed 13-10 entering the last period of play when sophomore
Brandon Davenport (Grosse Pointe Woods, MI/GP North) ignited the late Titan rally by winning the face-off and beating the RMU goalie for a score. Just a few minutes later, the Titan defense came up with a turnover as Harris knocked it away, and after senior
Matt Gregson's (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) shot was saved, Adams corralled the ground ball and put it between the pipes to get the Titans within one.
Halfway through the fourth quarter, Harris again forced a bad RMU (3-3) clear and this time, Adams found junior
Ty Maruyama (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain), who knotted it at 13-all with 7:32 left.
Detroit looked like it was going to pull out the victory firing three shots in the final two minutes, and even having a two-man advantage with under a minute to go, but the Colonials were able to kill the penalties and send the game into overtime, where they would win it.
Harris ended the game with a career-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) had four caused turnovers and a game-high 10 ground balls, while Davenport finished 16-of-29 in face-offs.
UDM forced 17 turnovers on the day and did a better job clearing ending the contest with an 18-of-22 mark. The Titans also led in ground balls, 40-34.
The game did not start out the way Detroit wanted as the Colonials opened a big lead in the first. After Lehto tied the contest at 1-1, Robert Morris reeled off four-straight goals to take a 5-1 advantage with 5:57 left in the first.
Detroit trailed 6-2 in the second when freshman
Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) scored on the man-up and Harris followed with a tally less than 30 seconds later to get Detroit to 6-4. The Titans also were down by just two (7-5) after Gregson struck for a marker with 10:20 left in the first half, but the Colonials once again opened a four-goal lead at 9-5.
The red, white and blue stormed back with three-straight goals to cut the RMU lead to just one, 9-8, at the half. Detroit would also be within one in the third trailing 10-9 and 11-10, until the Colonials went out in front, 13-10, to start the fourth.
The Titans will now get ready for conference play as Detroit opens the MAAC portion of its schedule on Saturday, Mar. 19, when VMI visits Titan Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
