Interview On Titan YouTube With Tim Shoemaker
DETROIT -- Coming off a huge road victory at Siena, the Detroit men's lacrosse team will open its final two-game homestand of the season on Saturday as the Manhattan Jaspers visit Titan Field. Game time is slated for Noon.
Fans are encouraged to come out to the game and support the Titans, but live stats will be available for those that can't make it. The game will also feature a SAAC fundraiser for the Michigan Special Olympics as there will be a raffle to pie an athletic staff member in the face.
Detroit (3-8, 2-1 MAAC) captured a 13-11 victory over Siena on the road, a team that was selected to win the conference in the preseason coaches' poll. UDM never trailed after the first period of play and really took command of the contest with a 5-0 run to break a 6-all tie at the half. The Titans would completely dominate the third quarter scoring four goals - while blanking Siena - and picking up 12 ground balls en route to a school record 55 GB's.
The red, white and blue netted 13 goals for the third time in the past four games last week, and a lot of the production came from freshmen as four rookies tallied double-digit goals, including all five in the decisive 5-0 third-quarter run. Freshman
Shayne Adams continues to lead Detroit in scoring with 31 points on 27 goals and four assists, but UDM does have four other Titans in double digits in goals in senior
Matt Gregson (11), junior
Scott Harris (11), freshman
Alex Maini (11) and sophomore
Chris Nemes (10).
The Titan defense currently leads all Division I teams with 11.82 caused turnovers per game. Four Titans have double-digits in the caused turnover department in sophomore
Jordan Houtby (37), sophomore
Jamie Hebden (23), junior
Jason McDonald (17) and sophomore
John Dwyer (10). Sophomore
Brandon Davenport has secured at least 50% of his face-offs in two-straight games and three of the last four contests, while Sophomore goalie
A.J. Levell has been stellar in net stopping 10+ shots for the fourth-straight game with his 16 saves his last time out.
Manhattan (3-9, 2-0 MAAC) is the early leader in the conference having defeated VMI (16-10) and Jacksonville (10-8). The Jaspers started the year with seven-straight losses, but have been playing better of late winning three of their last five games. They are coming off a 13-8 setback at No. 8 Hofstra on Tuesday. Justin Jensen leads four Manhattan players in double-digit goals with 16. Tyler Jarvis is second on the team with 12 goals, while Brian McGrath has 11. Jaspers' goalie Rich Akapnitis is the reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Week and has started eight of Manhattan's 10 games, posting 120 saves and a 10.32 goals against average.
This is the third-straight year that the Titans will face Manhattan as the Jaspers garnered a 14-9 victory on a neutral field (Robert Morris) in 2009 and an 11-8 decision at home last year.
