MILWAUKEE, Wis.-- Sarah Hagen's second-half goal proved to be the difference as 15th-ranked Milwaukee held off Detroit, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium in Horizon League play. The match was played under a steady, sometimes torrential, downpour.
"You go into an environment where that team has only lost once and is ranked one in the region," head coach
Mike Lupenec said. "Our team will grow from this. It was an even game-- we had our chances and they had theirs.
"In the second half they capitalized on our errors and good teams will punish you for that. We're happy with where we're at and hopefully we'll be able to get another shot at them in the tournament."
Milwaukee (10-1-0, 2-0-0 HL) got on the board first, tallying a goal in the tenth minute when Helen Steinhauser headed a ball off a cross and past UDM goalkeeper
Nora Abolins for a 1-0 Panther advantage.
A few minutes later, Abolins made a nice save on Hagen, the Horizon League's all-time leading scorer, who spun and fired a shot off her right foot in the box. Abolins quickly turned it aside and kept the match 1-0.
Sarah Dzuris had Detroit's best chance in the opening half, striking a direct kick from just outside the box on the right side that Jamie Forbes stopped, one of her three saves on the afternoon.
Detroit (8-4-1, 1-1-0) got a second-half goal from
Abby McCollum, who charged the net from the near sidelines, and potted one past Jamie Forbes for her sixth goal of the season. That tally tied her with
Alyssa Riley for the team lead in that category.
UWM answered with the eventual game-winner in the 67th minute when Hagen cleaned up a rebound in front for her 13th tally of the season.
Abolins made seven saves on nine shots for Detroit.
The Titans host Green Bay Saturday at Titan Field with kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
