DETROIT (10/27/12) – The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team cruised to an 87-55 win over Ryerson University to open its exhibition season on Saturday at Calihan Hall. Five Titans scored in double figures including 16 points from both junior guard
Jason Calliste and senior forward
Nick Minnerath.
Junior
Ray McCallum scored 14 points to go along with a game-high eight assists and six steals to help lead the Titans, while
Doug Anderson scored an efficient 14 points, shooting 7-for-10 from the floor. Freshman
Anton Wilson also reached double figures with 12 points, all from downtown, as he shot 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
The Titans opened the game with an early 7-3 run in the first couple minutes of action, but Ryerson responded with an 8-0 run to take its only lead of the game 11-7 with 15:27 left in the first half. But Detroit answered back with a 35-16 run to close the half, including 10-straight points capped off by a dunk from Anderson, to take a 42-27 lead into the locker room.
Minnerath led all scorers with 12 points in the first half, while Calliste had eight and both McCallum and Anderson had six. The Titans defense really sparked the run forcing 14 turnovers in the half, which resulted in 16 points for Detroit.
In the second half the Titans jumped out with a 19-5 run to build a 61-32 lead with 12:36 remaining and never looked back as their lead hovered around 20 points the remaining 12 minutes of the game. Calliste and McCallum led the charge early as they combined for 14 of the Detroit's first 19 points. McCallum scored eight-straight points including back-to-back dunks that came off two-straight steals, while Wilson finished the game by knocking down four three pointers, including three-straight, which brought the Titan bench to its feet.
Detroit shot 50.7 percent from the floor, while holding Ryerson to 35.1 percent overall. The Titans won the battle on the boards 40-36 and forced 23 turnovers, while distributing 20 assists and recording seven blocked shots.
Detroit will conclude its exhibition season when it hosts Tiffin on Saturday, Nov. 3. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Calihan Hall and will have live stats available on the
