A day off
UDM clinched a post season berth with a 1-0 win at Milwaukee on Wednesday, Oct 24 and clinched a first-round bye after they defeated Loyola, 2-1, Saturday, Oct. 27 at Titan Field on senior day. With a Detroit win or draw, or a Cleveland State draw or loss, Detroit will clinch the number one seed in the Horizon League Championships and earn home field advantage throughout the tournament. The only scenario that UDM will not be the top seed would be if it lost to UIC and Cleveland state beat Green Bay on Saturday, Nov. 3.
A league of his own
Adam Bedell, a 6-6 junior midfielder from Livonia, Mich., currently sits alone at the top of the Horizon League with 25 points and the only one with 10 goals. He is also tied for the league lead with five assists. Bedell has scored a goal in the previous two games for UDM, including the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in a 1-0 thriller at Milwaukee on Wednesday, October 26. He also leads the league with four Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week awards and was noted as a top offensive performer on October 29.
Last line of defense
Sophomore goalie
Nathan Steinwascher is 5-1 and has a 0.88 goals against average (GAA) in Horizon League contests. Steinwascher has allowed a mere five goals in six games and has accumulated 22 saves with two shutouts against HL opponents.
On the road again
UDM is the only team in the Horizon League with a winning record on the road (5-4) including a perfect 2-0 mark in conference play. Detroit has captured four of it's past five road wins, with wins over Milwaukee and Wright State, and a victory over regionally-ranked Western Michigan.
On fire
The Flames have lost just two of their previous 10 games, winning three in a row before a 1-0 loss at Cleveland State on Saturday, Oct. 29. CSU scored the only goal of the contest in the 55th minute to keep their chances at a top seed in the HL Championships alive. UIC cannot earn a first-round bye but is guaranteed a home game in the quarterfinals.
UIC is led by one of the premier scorers in the Horizon League in Ivan Stanisavljevic. Stanisavljevic has recorded 19 points on the year with seven goals and is tied for the league lead with five assists. The Flames have had 10 players record assists this year, with Kyle Lindberg and Jesus Tores combining for five helpers. In net, Piotr Kikolski is 5-4-2 and has made 30 saves with three shutouts to record a 1.11 GAA, third best in the HL.
A look back
The series between UDM and UIC is more equal. Detroit holds a slight edge (9-8-2) after
Cameron Roberts scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute to give UDM a 1-0 victory at Titan Field last season.
