QUEENS, N.Y. (11/13/12) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer as the St. John's Red Storm escaped with a 77-74 win on Tuesday at Carnesecca Arena as part of the ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. Three Titans scored in double figures led by
Ray McCallum who finished with a team-high 21 points.
McCallum made a lay-up with two seconds remaining to trim the Red Storm lead to three, he then deflected the inbounds pass directly to Juwan Howard, Jr. who fired a three pointer at the buzzer, which was online, but it came up short to give the Johnnies the win.
Senior
Jason Calliste pitched in 18 points, while Howard finished with 10.
Doug Anderson had another solid showing with eight points and nine rebounds, four offensive, while
Nick Minnerath and
Evan Bruinsma also scored eight points apiece.
Both teams swapped baskets for the first 15 minutes of action as the game was tied 25-25, before the Titans pieced together a 9-0 run to take a 34-25 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the half. The run was highlighted by a monster dunk on a put back from Anderson off a missed jumper from McCallum that finished No. 1 in the

But the Titans answered back with a 6-0 run including a three-pointer from McCallum to give Detroit a 47-39 lead with 14:25 remaining. Detroit's lead would then hover around eight points for the next five minutes as both teams swapped baskets, until St. John's put together a 7-0 run to tie the game, for the first time since the first half, 60-60 with 6:39 remaining. After a pair of baskets kept the game tied 62-62 with 5:43 left, the Red Storm were able to put together an 11-4 run over the next five minutes to hold a 73-66 lead with 31 second remaining. But the Titans weren't done as Howard was able to score six-straight points to close the gap to 75-72 with eight seconds remaining, but the Red Storm were able to make all six free throw attempts down the stretch to hold on for their first victory of the young season.
