NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (11/24/2012) --
In a game that featured six ties and seven lead changes, the Detroit women's basketball team could not pull one out in California as the Titans fell to South Alabama, 59-56, in the consolation game of the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Matadome.

Sophomore Shareta Brown led the Titans (2-3) with 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds as she was named to the All-Tournament Team. Freshman Rosanna Reynolds had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists, while senior Yar Shayok tallied 10 points, nine boards and a season-high four assists.

Detroit held South Alabama (5-1) to just 35.7% from the field, but 11 of the Lady Jaguars 20 field goals were from behind the arc.

UDM trailed by four at the break, 32-28, but scored the first five points in the second half to take the lead. The game was then tied at 35-all when the red, white and blue went on an 8-2 run to open a six-point advantage, 43-37, with 13:45 left. Four different Titans scored during that stretch as it appeared Detroit was ready to take control of the game.

South Alabama would chip away at the lead in the next five minutes and eventually knotted the game at 46-46 at the 8:25 mark. Detroit would jump ahead one more time, 48-46, as Brown got inside for a layup with 6:58 remaining, but USA would surge ahead and never trail again.

UDM had an opportunity to take the lead with 4:35 left as it trailed by one, 49-48, but a turnover ended that possession. Shayok then connected on a jumper to pull the Titans within two, 52-50, but Detroit could not get that tying or go-ahead basket as the Lady Jaguars ran their lead to six, 57-51 with just 32 second left.

Sophomore Audrey Matteson finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while Shayok swatted away two shots to move into sixth place in Titan history with 90 career blocks.

Both teams shot 38.0% in the first half, but South Alabama had seven 3-pointers out of its 10 field goals to earn the lead at the break.

A 3-pointer by junior Megan Hatter started the game for the Titans as they raced out to a 9-3 advantage early. That was erased with a 9-0 run by South Alabama and the Lady Jags would eventually take a five-point lead, 19-14, with 8:09 left in the first.

UDM cut into that at the free throw line as a pair from Matteson and one from Brown trimmed the deficit to two, and Brown would then tie the contest at 19-all with an inside basket.

Shayok would give UDM a brief lead at 23-22 as she got inside for a layup, but USA held off that Titan spurt to take a 32-28 lead at the half.

The Titans will return home to face Western Michigan on Wednesday, Nov. 28, with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m., on Dick Vitale Court in Calihan Hall. For ticket information, click here or contact the Titan Ticket office at (313) 993-1700.

Notes:
Detroit and South Alabama had played just once before and that was at the Rattler Classic on Dec. 4, 1999, with the Titans winning that game 74-66… The Titans have lost nine straight in-season tournament games with their last win coming in the Lady Luck Classic in 2006…Shayok now has 943 points in her career, passing former teammate Jalesa Jones for 18th in school history in scoring, and will now look to pass another former teammate Sandi Brown (983) for 17th…. Freshman Destiny Lavita-Stephens recorded her first collegiate points on a 3-pointer late in the first half…Matteson had scored in double digits in all four previous games…Detroit held a 34-14 advantage in points in the paint, and now has a 164-116 advantage against opponents on the season in that area…UDM has outrebounded its opponent in all five games this season.
