BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (11/27/12) – Junior
Ray McCallum scored a team-high 25 points, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell 70-65 to Bowling Green Tuesday night at the Stroh Center.
McCallum shot 10-for-18 from the field to record his fourth 20-point performance of the young season, while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Senior
Nick Minnerath also had a strong performance with 17 points, 9-for-11 from the charity stripe, while classmate
Doug Anderson scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
After controlling the opening tip, BGSU (3-3) took an early, 9-4, lead into the first media timeout. Detroit then answered back with a 5-2 run over the next couple of minutes, including a dunk from McCallum, to trim the Falcons lead to 11-9 with 13:36 remaining in the half. BGSU then responded with a 16-5 run to build a 27-14 lead with seven minutes left. But the Titans closed the half with a 16-7 run, including six-straight points from McCallum followed by a monster dunk from Anderson, to trim the Falcons lead to 34-30 heading into the locker room. McCallum led all scorers with 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting in the first half, while Minnerath pitched in seven points. The Titans only shot 28.6 percent from the floor in the first half, but cashed in on 14-of-17 free throw attempts, while BGSU shot 56.5 percent from the floor and only made 5-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe.
BGSU opened the second half with a 6-2 run to build a 40-32 lead, but the Titans responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a two-handed jam from McCallum, to give Detroit its first lead of the game, 41-40, with 13:55 left. The Falcons then answered back on their next possession with a three-pointer from Jordon Crawford, who was fouled in the act of shooting, and made his free throw to convert the four-point play.
The Titans weren't done as a pair of baskets from Minnerath, followed by a monster jam from Anderson tied the score, 47-47, with 9:31 left. BGSU then pieced together a 7-2 run over the next couple of minutes to take a 56-49 lead, but a pair of three-pointers from McCallum and Juwan Howard, Jr. brought the Titans back to within a point, 58-57, with 5:27 left. Both teams then swapped baskets for the next four minutes as BGSU held a 63-61 lead with 1:30 remaining. The Falcons then made 7-of-8 free throw attempts down the stretch to claim the win.
Detroit outrebounded BGSU, 36-30, and forced 10 turnovers, but the Falcons shot 45.8 percent from the field, while holding the Titans to just 37.5 percent. The Falcons also shot 9-for-22 from downtown, while holding Detroit to a season low 3-for-17 from beyond the arc. The Titans did make a season-high 20-of-25 free throw attempts in the game.
BGSU was led by Crawford who scored a game-high 26 points on 9-for-16 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from downtown, while A'uston Calhoun scored nine points and Chauncey Orr pitched in eight.
