Postgame With Coach Rademacher & Fambro
HLN Highlights
DETROIT (11/28/12) -- Led by sophomore
Shareta Brown's career-high 35, and a season-high 18 from senior
Demeisha Fambro, the Detroit women's basketball team completely dominated in-state rival Western Michigan, 97-57, on Wednesday night at Calihan Hall.
The win was the third straight over WMU for the Titans as Detroit evened its record to 3-3 on the year, while the Broncos fell to 2-4. The 97 points were the most scored by the Titans since they defeated Miami (Ohio) 99-76 on Dec. 6, 2000, while the 40-point win was the most since they crushed Marygrove, 68-27, on Dec. 27, 2010.
The 35-point explosion was the fourth career 30-point game for Brown, and she also added 11 rebounds for her 14th career double-double. Brown – who came into the game 11th in the nation in scoring at 22.2 ppg. - was 12-of-18 from the field and 11-of-14 from the free throw line with three assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Fambro – who last week notched 17 against #6/7 Penn State – earned her first start of the season and tied her career high with nine boards. She was 8-of-13 from the field with three assists of her own.
Senior
Yar Shayok tallied nine points and 10 rebounds and freshman
Destiny Lavita-Stephens scored a season-high 10 points.
It was a complete effort on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court for the Titans right from the start as UDM raced out to a double-digit lead with a 23-2 run over a nine-minute span in the first. Fambro started the Titan charge with seven-straight points, nine in that run, while Brown added six. Shayok, junior
Megan Hatter, sophomore
Audrey Matteson and freshman
Rosanna Reynolds also all scored as the team effort put Detroit out in front, 26-5, at the 8:39 mark.
While the offense was doing the job on its end, the Detroit defense was just as impressive holding WMU to just 1-of-12 shooting with seven turnovers during that period of play.
The Titans would actually increase their lead to 23 in the first half and led 41-18 at the break. In that first half, UDM shot 56.7% from the field (17-of-30), while the tantalizing Titan "D" forced 15 turnovers and saw WMU shoot just 26.7% (8-of-30).
The red, white and blue showed no mercy in the second half as they reeled off a 19-8 run to take a 60-26 lead. Detroit would never see its advantage fall under 23 and gradually pushed it into the 30's before settling for the 40-point win.
Matteson netted nine points and pulled down eight rebounds, the third time this season she has grabbed at least eight caroms in a game. Hatter finished with a season-best eight points and six rebounds, while Reynolds and freshman
Tayelor McCalister came away with four apiece.
Reynolds and Matteson each handed out four assists, while Brown, Shayok, Matteson and Stephens all had three as the Titans posted a season-high 21 assists.
The Titans will return to action on Sunday as they head to Athens, Ohio, to face Ohio University. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
