DETROIT (11/3/12) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team concluded its exhibition season with a 123-71 slaying of the Tiffin Dragons Saturday night at Calihan Hall. Six Titans scored in double figures led by
Nick Minnerath and
Jason Calliste, who combined for 45 points.
Minnerath led all scorers with 24 points, going 8-of-10 from the field with three triples in just 17 minutes of action. Calliste netted 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting with three 3-pointers, four rebounds and three assists.
Ray McCallum added 16 points, a team-high five assists and three steals, while
Doug Anderson slammed home 16 points, mostly via the dunk.
P.J. Boutte and
Evan Bruinsma each tallied double digits coming off the bench as Boutte finished with 11 markers and four helpers and Bruinsma totaled 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Detroit opened the game with a 25-6 run in the first seven minutes of action and never looked back as the Titans took a 68-41 lead into the locker room. Calliste led all scorers with 19 points in the first half, while Minnerath had 17 and Anderson 12. The Titans defense sparked the run forcing 13 turnovers in the half, which resulted in 24 points for Detroit.
In the second half the Titans lead hovered around 30 points until the defense held Tiffin to just three points in the final seven minutes of action to record the 52 point win.
Detroit outrebounded Tiffin, 39-27, and had a sensational day running the offense generating 25 assists to just 10 turnovers. Defensively, UDM forced 25 Tiffin turnovers; coming away with 13 steals in the contest.
Detroit shot 57.1 percent from the field, hitting 44-of-77 field goals, including 13-of-28 from behind the arc.
The Titans ended the preseason averaging 105 points in their two games, and will open their regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 against Northern Michigan. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network.
