The Titans got a career-high 35 points from
Shareta Brown and a season-high 18 from
Demeisha Fambro in the win over the Broncos, but it was the Titan defense that really took charge of the game. Detroit held WMU to just 27.5% shooting as the Broncos made just 19-of-69 shots, including 3-of-14 from beyond the arc, while forcing a season-high 19 turnovers.
The Titan offense connected on 54.7% (35-of-64) and handed out a season-high 21 assists.
Up next for the Titans will be Ball State next Thursday in Muncie, Ind., as the Titans continue their “MAC” swing.
THE DETROIT-OHIO SERIES
The Titans and Bobcats have met just five times, with the last occurring on Nov. 29, 2003, and Ohio holds a slim 3-2 advantage.
In an interesting twist, each team is 2-0 on road in the series with the difference a Bobcat 74-59 victory in a tournament at Indiana State in 1985.
ABOUT THE BOBCATS
Ohio started the year with a win over Horizon League member Cleveland State, 63-56, but has since dropped four straight, including a 65-61 loss to UMass on Thursday.
Shavon Robinson leads the team in scoring at 11.6 points to go with 5.0 rebounds per game, while Mariah Byard is tallying 9.2 ppg. Symone Lyles tops the team on the boards at 5.4 rpg.
Ohio is averaging 54 points, while allowing 65.6. The Bobcats are also being outrebounded by a - 7.8 margin.
AGAINST THE BUCKEYE STATE
Detroit is 112-108 all-time against schools from the state of Ohio.
While the Titans have enjoyed success against the Horizon League schools based in the Buckeye State (73-42 against Cleveland State, Wright State, Youngstown State), Detroit is 39-66 against non-conference Ohio schools with their last win against Ohio (47- 44) on Nov. 29, 2003.
During this span, UDM has lost 14-straight out of conference games to the rival state.
AGAINST THE MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE
With their dominating 97-57 victory against Western Michigan on Thursday, the Titans are now 75-62 all-time against current teams from the Mid-American Conference, including 8-3 in their last 11 games.
Since head coach Autumn Rademacher took over the reins as the Titan leader in 2008, Detroit is 9-6 against the league.
WHAT AN OFFENSIVE SHOW
In the Titans 97-57 win over Western Michigan, the 97 points represented the most scored by the Titans since they defeated Miami (Ohio) 99-76 on Dec. 6, 2000, while the 40-point win was the most since they crushed NAIA member Marygrove by 41, 68-27, on Dec. 27, 2010.
The last 40-point victory over a Division I foe was on Dec. 14, 1995, when the red, white and blue steamrolled McNesse State by 42, 96-54.
MORE OFFENSIVE NOTES
Detroit shot a season-best 54.7% from the field hitting 35-of-64 in the 97-57 win over WMU. It was the highest field-goal percentage the Titans have connected on since setting a school record with a 65.5% in a 90-60 win last year against IPFW.
The 35 field goals were also the most since that game too as UDM was 38-of-58 against the Mastodons.
LENDING A HAND
Six Titans recorded at least three assists in the win over Western Michigan as Detroit posted a season-high 21 in the game.
The 21 assists were the most since UDM had 23 in a 68-52 win over Valparaiso last year.
OFFENSE WINS GAMES, DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Not to be lost in the 97-point outburst by the Titans was the great defensive performance UDM put on against Western Michigan.
Detroit held the Broncos to just 27.5% shooting as WMU was 19-of-69 from the field and 3-of-14 from behind the arc. The Titans also forced a season-high 19 turnovers - 15 in the first half - and held a 22-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
The 57 points allowed marked the fourth time this year Detroit has held an opponent under 60 points, with the only two teams to score more a pair of Big Ten programs in Michigan (70) and Penn State (80).
Last season, the Titan defense held an opponent to under 60 points 14 times and under 50 points on five occasions.
DOMINATING THE BOARDS ALREADY
Detroit has outrebounded its opponents in all six games and currently owns a + 8.5 rebounding margin.
UDM dominated the boards against #6/7 Penn State with a 46-31 advantage. UDM also completely owned the boards versus Canisius (44-28) and Western Michigan (49-36).
Last season, Detroit won the battle of the boards in 23 of its 34 games, including 11 times by a double-digit margin.
HITTING THE FREE ONES
The Titans were just 52.4% from the free throw line in the first three games, but have turned it on since then hitting 45 of their last 57 attempts (78.9%) in the last three contests.
UDM was very effective from the charity stripe going 18-of-22 (81.8%) against Penn State, while making 20-of-24 versus WMU.
