DETROIT (11/5/2012) -- It was another monster offensive performance put on by the Titans as Detroit never trailed in its 125-35 victory over Marygrove on Monday night. The win gave UDM a perfect 2-0 record in the preseason as the red, white and blue prepare for the season opener at Michigan on Friday.
The contest came a day after both programs worked together on a
community service project to help clean up the mile stretch of McNichols that separates the two schools.
Seven Titans scored in double figures on the day, led by sophomore
Shareta Brown's 29 points. Senior
Yar Shayok tallied a double-double for the second-straight game with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman
Rosanna Reynolds finished with 17 points, a game-high eight assists and five rebounds.
Senior
Demeisha Fambro totaled 17 points and sophomores
Audrey Matteson and
Brie Wilcox and freshman
Destiny Lavita-Stephens netted 10 points apiece.
Just like in its first exhibition, Detroit got off to a quick start as Brown converted an offensive rebound into a layup and Shayok drilled a three to give the Titans a 5-0 lead not even a minute into the game.
After a free throw by Marygrove made it 7-3, the Titans pushed their lead to double digits, 26-7, on the strength of a 19-4 run spanning six minutes. Shayok was 4-for-4 from the line during that spurt, while Reynolds and Matteson each netted five points apiece.
It wasn't just the offense doing the damage, the suffocating Titan's defense was doing their part holding Marygrove to just 19.0 % shooting (4-of-21) and outrebounding the Mustangs, 27-6, 15 minutes into the game as they ran their lead to 51-13.
Detroit kept its foot on the pedal taking a 64-19 lead into the break as the Titans shot 51.1% in the first half, while adding a 12-of-14 effort from the free-throw line.
The second half followed the same script as the first with Detroit increasing its advantage to as many as 78, 105-27, with a 41-8 run to begin the stanza. The Titans then had their largest lead of the game at 91, 124-33, at the 2:01 mark in the second half.
Detroit ended the game shooting 58.1% from the field with 31 assists. UDM was also 8-of-20 from outside the arc and 17-of-20 (85.0%) at the charity stripe.
The defense held the Mustangs to 21.4% from the field (12-of-56), while forcing 26 turnovers. UDM also won the battle of the boards, 59-23, and held a 72-14 advantage on points in the paint.
The Titans will kick off the regular season on Friday as Detroit visits Big Ten and in-state rival Michigan at the Crisler Center. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. For live stats and live video of the game, visit the Titans'
