O Captains! Detroit Captains!

DETROIT (11/6/12) –The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball head coach Ray McCallum has announced that senior forward Nick Minnerath along with junior guards Jason Calliste and Ray McCallum have been selected as team captains for the 2012-13 season.

“I am very excited about coaching this team in large part because of the strong leadership, maturity, and commitment that Nick, Jason and Ray have exhibited throughout the off season and in our early practices,” stated coach McCallum. “These three student-athletes consistently do the right things on and off the court and have provided a lead by example model for their younger teammates to follow.”

Minnerath is one of only two seniors on the team and is returning to lineup after missing a majority of the season last year due to injury. Minnerath the 2010-11 Titans co-MVP averaged 11.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as a junior, including six 20-point games over the final two months of action. He averaged 12.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in the first five games last year before enduring a season ending injury.

Calliste, the team's sharp-shooter, led the squad in three-pointers made (56) and three-point percentage (34.4), will look to pick-up right where he finished his junior campaign, after scoring in double-figures in 15 of the final 20 games including 17 points in the HL Championship game. Calliste finished last year starting 34 games and averaging 10.2 points per game.

McCallum had a tremendous sophomore season earning a host of accolades and honors. He was named the Robert Calihan Team MVP and an All-Horizon League First Team selection - the first by a Titan since 2003 - as well as the Horizon League Championship MVP. McCallum was also named to the Lou Henson All-America team as well as the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA) All-District First Team. He was also tabbed the CollegeSportsMadness.com HL Player of the Year, and named to the National All-Jesuit Team.

McCallum enters his third season with a load of expectations. He was named the Horizon League's Preseason Player of the Year and to the all-League First team by a handful of publications, including Lindy's Sports College Basketball and Athlon Sports College Basketball magazines. McCallum was also selected as the HL Preseason Player of the Year in both the CBSSports.com Conference Catch-up and the SBNation.com Horizon League Preview.

The Titans won last year's Horizon League Tournament Championship and were third during the regular season finishing with a 22-14 record, including an 11-7 mark in the conference. Detroit returns eight letterwinners and three starters from that squad.
