Ray McCallum scored a game-high 24 points, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell, 74-61, to Pittsburgh Saturday night at the Petersen Events Center. The Titans held a 37-29 lead at halftime, before the Panthers outscored Detroit 45-24 in the second half.
McCallum shot 7-for-13 from the field to record his fifth 20-point performance of the season, the 19th of his career, while also grabbing a team-high seven rebounds. Junior
Evan Bruinsma scored a season-high 14 points, with six rebounds, while classmate
Jason Calliste pitched in 12 points and three assists.
After controlling the opening tip, Pitt (7-1) took an early 8-0 lead, before the Titans responded with a 25-4 run to build a 25-12 lead with 7:14 left. The Panthers then answered back with a 14-4 run to trim Detroit's lead to 29-26 with 3:29 remaining. The Titans then closed the half with an 8-3 run to take a 37-29 lead into the locker room. McCallum led Detroit with 17 points and five rebounds in the first half, while Calliste had 10 points and two boards.
Pitt opened the second half with a 16-4 spurt to take the lead, 45-41, with 11:20 remaining. But the Titans responded with an 8-4 run, capped by a lay-up from
Ugochukwu Njoku, to tie the game 49-49 with 8:23 left. The Panthers then responded by closing the game with a 25-12 run down the stretch to grab the win.
Pitt outrebounded Detroit, 31-30, and forced 13 Titan turnovers to 11. The Panthers also shot 48.0 percent for the game, 63.6 percent in the second half, while holding Detroit to 38.8 percent overall and just 32.1 percent in the second half.
Pitt was led by Talib Zanna who scored 16 points, with five rebounds and two blocked shots, while Tray Woodall scored 14 points and Lamar Patterson pitched in 12.
Detroit (2-4) will begin a four-game homestand on Wednesday, Dec. 5, when the Titans host Toledo on
Star Wars Night at Calihan Hall. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., and will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a mini light saber. Star Wars characters scheduled to be at the game are Chewbacca, Tarfful, R2D2, Stormtroopers, X Wing Pilots, Lando Calrissian, and from the dark side, Darth Vader himself.
