LAST TIME OUT
Junior
Jason Calliste scored a game-high 24 points and Juwan Howard, Jr. added 16 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team grounded the Toledo Rockets, 79-73, Wednesday at Calihan Hall on Star Wars night. The Titans used a 20-5 run, including three monster dunks from
Doug Anderson, to break open a 54-54 tie with 10:24 remaining to extend their home winning streak to 11-straight.
Anderson finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and two blocked shots, as junior
Ray McCallum scored seven points and dished out a season-high 10 assists, to go along with a game-high eight rebounds, two blocked shots, and two steals. Freshman
Anton Wilson also had a good showing as he scored a career-high nine points, with three assists, and two steals.
Toledo outrebounded Detroit, 37-35, but the Titans forced 18 turnovers, while dishing out 19 assists. The Titans bench also outscored the Rockets bench 20-9. Toledo shot 45.6 percent for the game, while Detroit shot 42.6 percent overall, including 42.9 from downtown. Toledo was led by Brown who scored 20 points, with five assists, and five rebounds while Pearson added 19 points and eight boards.
SERIES WITH ROCHESTER
This will be the third meeting between Detroit and Rochester, with the Titans owning a 2-0 lead. Detroit won the last meeting, 67-51, during the 2007-08 season in Calihan Hall.
ABOUT THE WARRIORS
Rochester (11-5) was led by Drew Maynard, who recorded a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Dramell Hogan had 19 and Stavros Schizas chipped in with 16 in an, 88-77, loss at Oakland on Thursday.
Rochester, which reached the USCAA National Championship Game last year, has shown some early success versus DI opponents, picking up a win over Eastern Illinois (59-56) and played tough games at Kent State (L, 77-71), Fort Wayne (L, 73-56), Texas-Pan American (L, 74-65) and Eastern Michigan (L, 66-52).
TITANS LOVE CALIHAN
Detroit is 3-0 this year at home and has won 11-straight in Calihan Hall dating back to last season. The Titans have averaged 75.2 points per game over that stretch, while only allowing opponents to score 64 points on Dick Vitale Court. Detroit's last loss at home came on Jan. 6, 2012 against Valparaiso, 73-71.
DETROIT LOVES THE 80's
This season the Titans are a perfect 2-0 when scoring 80 or more points and have extended their winning streak to 16 games when doing so. Last year Detroit finished undefeated (9-0) when reaching the 80-point mark. The Last time the Titans lost a game when scoring 80 points or more came at Milwaukee during the 2010-11 season, when the Panthers won in overtime 84-81.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Detroit junior
Ray McCallum currently leads the Titans in three categories this season scoring (19.1 ppg), assists (4.6 apg) and steals (1.7 spg) and is also climbing up the career record board in all three. McCallum has 1,135 points (26th), 336 assist (11th) and 123 steals (15th) in his career. The last Titan to rank among the top-10 in all three of those categories was Rashad Phillips '01. Phillips finished his spectacular career with 2,319 points (1st), 548 assists (4th) and 190 steals (2nd). McCallum needs 467 points, five assists and 17 steals to reach that plateau.
TITANS ON REGIONAL/NATIONAL TELEVISION
The Titans 2012-13 men's basketball television schedule recently grew with the addition of three FOX Sports Detroit broadcasts. FSD, the same station that carries the “Detroit Titan Court Report” along with Detroit Pistons, Tigers and Red Wings games, will once again partner with the Titans to strengthen one of the more impressive television packages in the Horizon League.
Those games bring the total number of regional and national televised appearances to 14, including a minimum of 10 on the ESPN family of networks and one Horizon League "Game of the Week". The three-game slate on FSD begins Dec. 15 when the Akron Zips visit Calihan Hall for a noon tip. More than a month later, the Titans face conference rival UIC with a 6:30 p.m. match-up on Jan. 19, before hosting Loyola at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 26.
