Postgame Press Conference
DETROIT (12/8/12) –Ten Titans scored as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team cruised past the Rochester Warriors, 102-67, Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall. The win extended the Titans home winning streak to 12-straight games.
Junior
Ray McCallum led Detroit with a game-high 24 points hitting 8-of-10 from the field, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line, while
Jason Calliste and
Anton Wilson scored 14 apiece. Senior
Nick Minnerath and Juwan Howard, Jr. also reached double figures with 11 points each. Minnerath also had a team-high nine rebounds, while
Doug Anderson handed out a career-high seven assists.
Detroit (4-4) took an early, 7-2, lead before the Warriors responded with a 7-0 run, to take a 9-7 lead with 14:41 left. But the Titans responded with a 19-4 run over the next four minutes to build a 26-13 lead. Rochester answered back with an 8-2 run to trim the lead to 28-21 with 6:47 left, but that was as close as the game would get as Detroit closed the half with a 25-8 run to take a 53-29 lead into the locker room. McCallum led Detroit with 13 points on 4-for-6 shooting, including 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, while Calliste pitched in 10 points and Howard added eight.
Detroit would lead by as much as 40 in the second half and played everyone on the bench, which provided 36 points. Wilson led the Titans bench with a career-high 14 points, including nine in the second half, while
Evan Bruinsma and
P.J. Boutte each scored seven.
Jermaine Lippert and
Gabriel Dos Santos each scored four points off the bench, while
Ugochukwu Njoku grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in just 10 minutes of action.
Detroit won the battle on the boards, 37-29, and forced 20 Rochester turnovers, which resulted in 26 points. Detroit also shot a season-high 54.8 percent from the field, including 48.1 percent from downtown, while Rochester shot 45.5 percent.
Rochester (11-6) was led by Dramell Hogan who finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, while Drew Maynard pitch in 13 points and Stavros Schizas scored 11.
Detroit will continue its homestand on Monday, Dec. 10 when the Titans host Alabama State at Calihan Hall. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network (HLN). The women's team opens Monday night with a game against Lourdes at 5:00 p.m., which will also be streamed live on HLN.
GAME NOTES: The 102 points scored by Detroit is the most by the Titans since last season when they rolled past Concordia, 113-68 … The Titans made 13 three-pointers for the second-straight game … Detroit extended its winning streak to 17-straight games when scoring 80 or more points … The Titans lead the all-time series against Rochester 3-0.
