Postgame Interview With Coach Rademacher Postgame Interview With Brown

TOLEDO, Ohio -- Freshman Shareta Brown (Pontiac, MI/Grand Blanc) posted her 14th 20-point game on the year, but a second-half Toledo run was the difference as Detroit's season came to an end with a 59-49 loss in the first round of the WNIT.

The Titans ended the year at 20-14, their first 20 win season since going 23-7 in 1997. It was also the first postseason appearance in the WNIT and the program's first postseason since making the NCAA Tournament in 1997.

Brown finished with 28 points and seven rebounds, her third-straight game with 20 or more. She ends a remarkable rookie season with a Titan record 611 points and became the first freshman to lead the team in scoring (18.0 ppg.) since head coach Autumn Rademacher did it with 15.2 ppg., in 1994. Her 55.9 field goal percentage is also third in school history.

The game featured nine ties and seven lead changes. After Toledo (22-9) – the defending WNIT Champions - knotted it at 25 with a basket to start the second half, Detroit recovered to take a four-point lead, 31-27, at the 17:41 mark.

The Titans continued to stay out in front for the next few minutes until the Rockets broke through with their first lead since midway through the first at 34-33. The Titans would jump back ahead at 41-39 and 43-41 – both on Brown buckets with the latest at 8:44 – but Toledo would go on a 15-2 run in the next seven minutes to open a double-digit advantage, 56-45, with just 1:55 remaining.

Junior Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) ended with eight points and nine rebounds, while Brown added two assists, two steals and tied her career high with three blocks.

Senior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) tallied seven points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. It was the final game of her career as she left UDM as the school's all-time leader in assists (513), games played (127) and games started (122), while finishing 17th in scoring with 939 points.

Senior Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) had three points, three rebounds and two assists. She also played her last game in the red, white and blue and she ended her career second in games played (123) and eighth with 349 career assists.

It was back and forth throughout the first half with three ties and four lead changes. The Titans trailed by one, 17-16, with 11:12 left when Detroit went ahead for the rest of the half. Brown – who had 13 points in the first period alone - was the main catalyst with six-straight points as the Titans took their largest lead of five, 22-17, with 7:36 left in the period.

After a Toledo basket, UDM regained its five-point advantage, 24-19, as Jones drove the lane for a layup. The red, white and blue would then head into the locker room with a 25-23 lead.
