ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (8/31/2012) -- Junior
Martin Nelkie led three top-10 Titans as the University of Detroit Mercy men's cross country team opened the season at the Golden Grizzly Open on Friday. The 6k meet was held on the OU campus.
No team scores were recorded in the event, which featured three Division I teams in Detroit, the host Oakland and IPFW.
Nelkie turned in one of his best collegiate finishes as he took fourth with a time of 19:24, overtaking senior teammate
Edwin Gay in the last half of the race. Gay would end up in sixth with a 19:50 run.
"It was a very hot day and it was a little rough out there on the course," said Nelkie. "I just wanted to have a reasonable race and start this season off properly. I did not have t0o many timed goals as this race was pretty hot and I did not run it last year."
Sophomore
Ryan Hofsess was the third Titan in taking 10th clocking in at 20:07, while sophomore
Colin Creagh was just outside the top-10 claiming 11th in 20:08.
Junior

George Holman was 21st in his collegiate debut, finishing in 20:44.
