Overtime Goal Leads Grizzlies to Victory

Box Score

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (8/31/2012) -- A late goal from Nina Carter forced overtime, but a golden goal in the extra session gave the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (2-1-1) a 3-2 win over the Detroit Titans (2-3-0) on Friday evening at the OU Soccer Field.

“We didn't have a lot of energy in the first 20 minutes and we made two mental mistakes which gave Oakland its first two goals,” said UDM women's soccer head coach Mike Lupenec.  “I felt in the second half, we played much better and had enough good chances to win the game.”

The first half saw a pair of goals from Oakland in a span of just under two minutes. A goal at 13:51 and another at 15:12 put the Titans in a 2-0 deficit.

Detroit countered with a marker of its own as Carter cashed in on a cross from Jennifer Borawski and Kaitlyn Quarrell. Borawski played a nice ball from the right side and played it to the left side of the six-yard box, where Quarrell headed it towards the right side of the net and Carter's header went into the goal.

The score would stay 2-1 into the break as Detroit posted four shots in the first half of play.

The second would see Detroit take eight shots with four of those on net.

Carter was finally able to break through for the equalizer in the 86th minute as she took a loose ball off a failed clearing attempt and found a home in the back of the net.

Overtime brought five minutes of scoreless play until the game ended at the 94:55 mark as Meghan Reynolds netted her second goal of the contest vaulting the Grizzlies to a 3-2 victory.

Freshman Martha Dunbar saw her first career action in collegiate play as she started in goal for the Titans. Dunbar made four saves and was able to come up with some big stops to keep Detroit in the game.

In the final tune-up before the team's trip to Hawaii, UDM had its chances to score with an 8-6 shooting advantage in the second half bringing the total shot count to 14-13 in favor of Oakland.

“Martha played great in her first game as a Division I goaltender and sometimes our defenders are a little more tentative in their decisions when that happens,” said Lupenec. “In our losses, we have created great chances and sometimes you have to keep grinding throughout the season and things will fall into place.”
