DETROIT (9/27/2012) -- The left post, a save by a defender, and a tough opposing goalie kept all 22 of Detroit's shots out of the net as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer squad fell by a 2-0 score in Horizon League action to the Milwaukee Panthers on Thursday afternoon at Titan Field.

“The shots today were huge. We were playing a team that is the defending champion so you're going to have to do things well offensively to beat them. We had enough chances to win the game but their goaltender played exceptional and made some big saves at crucial moments of the game,” said UDM head coach Mike Lupenec.

Detroit (4-5-1, 1-1 Horizon League) finished with a 22-13 overall shooting advantage, including 9-3 in the first half and four in the final 10 minutes of the contest. Three of those final four shots came off headers from  corner kicks with one from Heather Brown that went high and two from Alyssa Riley that were both saved by the goalkeeper.

Milwaukee goalkeeper Jamie Forbes, the 2011 Horizon League Co-Defensive Player of the Year, made nine saves for the shutout.

Milwaukee (2-6-1, 1-1 HL) scored in the 18th minute and added a second goal at 49:20.

“I told the girls if we were dominated and outplayed I would be disappointed, but I felt our girls put in a great effort today and the only thing we can do is fix some of the defensive errors that created the scoring opportunities for Milwaukee,” said Lupenec.

Kaitlyn Quarrell and Haley Burtraw were both tied for the team lead with six shots apiece. Both, as well as other Titans had tremendous opportunities throughout the game.

Quarrell had two of the best chances on the day with a low hard shot at the 13:19 mark from just inside the 18-yard box that was saved to keep the game scoreless. She had another great chance early in the second half gaining the inside track on the goalkeeper, but her shot went off the left goal post at 54:02.

Riley had another great chance at 60:55 as Forbes was out challenging a play and Riley seemingly had an open net, but a Milwaukee defender stepped up and kicked the ball away as Detroit would be kept off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

Titan goalkeeper Nora Abolins made four saves, including a key diving stop with 12:40 to go as she lunged to the left of the net thwarting a Kelsey Holbert attempt.

Detroit will continue conference play Sunday afternoon as Loyola heads to Titan Field for a 1:00 p.m. start time. For all the info on the contest, check out Women's Soccer Game Day Central.
