DETROIT (1/21/13) -- For the second time in three games the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team had the final shot and just like the first attempt against Valparaiso Thursday, the three-pointer at the buzzer came up short as the Titans fell to Wright State 64-62 Monday night at Calihan Hall.
Junior guard
Ray McCallum heaved a shot from half court that hit the front of the rim as time expired, but the officials met and determined that head coach
Ray McCallum had called a time out before the shot was taken to give Detroit one more chance with 2.5 seconds remaining. Juwan Howard, Jr. then inbounded the ball to McCallum who took a shot from just above Dick Vitale's name on the court, just to see it come up short for a second time.
Senior
Doug Anderson led Detroit (12-8, 4-3 HL) with a game-high 20 points, while classmate
Nick Minnerath added 12.
Jason Calliste and Howard both scored 10, while McCallum pitched in eight points, six assists, and four rebounds. Anderson led the Titans with six boards.
Wright State (14-5, 5-1 HL) jumped out to an early 10-3 lead heading into the first media timeout, before stretching its lead to 21-9 with 12:15 left. The Titans then trimmed the gap to four, following a pair of three pointers from Calliste and a layup from McCallum, to make the score 25-21 with 5:35 left. But the Raiders were able to close the half with a 14-9 run to take a 39-30 lead into the locker room. Anderson lead the Titans with 11 points, while Calliste and McCallum each scored six. Wright State shot 50.0 percent (15-30) in the first half, while Detroit shot 40.7 percent (11-27).
Both teams swapped baskets to begin the second half before the Titans put together a 6-0 run to trim the Raiders lead to 47-43 with 11:34 remaining. Wright State then responded with a 5-0 run to take a 52-43 lead with 8:29 left. Detroit answered with a 10-1 run, capped off by a monster dunk from Anderson, to tie the game 53-53 with 5:03 remaining. But the Raiders responded with a three-point play the old fashioned way when Cole Darling was fouled while making a layup, to regain the lead 56-53. Anderson answered back on the ensuing possession with a layup of his own to trim the lead to 56-55 with 4:17 left. That would be as close as the score would get until Calliste made a pair of free throws with 43 seconds left to make the score, 64-62. The Titans' defense then stood its ground on Wright State's next possession forcing a tough shot which allowed Howard to grab a rebound with six seconds left, who passed the ball out to McCallum who launched the shot from half court.
Wright State won the battle on the boards, 31-29, but Detroit forced 15 Raider turnovers, which resulted in 12 points for the Titans. Wright State shot 50.0 percent (24-48) overall, while Detroit shot 37.5 percent (21-56) overall, including 31.6 percent (6-19) from downtown. Detroit finished 14-of-16 from the charity stripe, while Wright State connected on 12-of-15 from the foul line.
Wright State was led by Kendall Griffin who scored 15 points while Reggie Arceneaux pitched in 11 and Darling added 10.
Detroit will hit the road for Chicago when the Titans face Loyola on Saturday, Jan. 26. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET at Gentile Arena and will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network. The game will also be televised live on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
