Titans Top Loyola 75-63, Grab Third Road Win

-- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team captured its third road win of the season on Saturday with a 75-63 topping of Loyola at Gentile Arena. All five starters scored in double figures for Detroit.

Junior guard Ray McCallum and sophomore Juwan Howard, Jr. led Detroit (13-8, 5-3 HL) with 17 points apiece, while Nick Minnerath added 14. Jason Calliste pitched in 12 points, while Doug Anderson added 11. Minnerath also led the team with seven rebounds, while McCallum grabbed six.

UDM was down by three at the half, 27-24, but outscored the Ramblers by 15, 51-36, in the second stanza thanks to some sizzling shooting that saw the Titans connect on 19 of their 25 shots (76%).

Loyola (12-8, 2-5 HL) scored eight of the second half's first 12 points to take a 35-28 lead, but the Titans then went on a 9-2 run to knot the score at 37-all with 15:41 left. The game was then tied at 39-39 when the Ramblers opened a five-point advantage, 45-40, in front of their home fans with13:28 remaining.

Detroit's next offensive spurt proved to be the difference as the Titans opened up a double-digit lead with a game-changing 19-4 run over the next seven minutes. Howard had nine of his 17 in that span and McCallum's jumper with 6:32 left put the red, white and blue in front, 59-49.

Loyola got as close as six down the stretch, but the Titans raised their lead to as many as 14 and closed the game out by hitting six of their last eight from the charity stripe.

The Titans ended the game shooting 50% from the field (28-of-56) and forced 17 Loyola turnovers, coming away with nine steals.

Detroit jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, capped off by a steal and dunk from McCallum, to force an early Ramblers timeout with 16:13 left. The Titans then built a 10-2 lead with 15:20 left, before the Ramblers responded with a 5-0 run to trim the lead to 10-7 with 14 minutes remaining. Detroit then put together a 6-1 run to build a 16-8 lead with 11 minutes left, before the Ramblers closed the half with a 19-8 run to take a 27-24 lead into the locker room. Minnerath led Detroit with eight points, while McCallum pitched in six. Loyola shot 38.5 percent (10-26) in the first half, while Detroit shot 29.0 percent (9-31).

Detroit will stay on the road as the Titans face Wright State on Wednesday, Jan. 30. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET at the Nutter Center and will be streamed live on the Horizon League Network.
