GREEN BAY, Wis. (1/8/13) -- The Detroit women's basketball team might have been in cold Wisconsin, but it ran into a hot Green Bay squad as the Titans fell, 62-31, on Tuesday night in the Horizon League opener for both schools in the Kress Events Center.

The loss drops UDM to 7-6 (0-1 HL) on the year, while Green Bay moved to 11-2 (1-0 HL).

Sophomore Shareta Brown led Detroit with eight points and five rebounds, while also coming away with three steals, two blocks, and an assist. The tough Green Bay defense limited her to just four shots and two fouls early in the first forced her to the bench for a good stretch.

Sophomore Audrey Matteson had five points, three rebounds, and a team-high four assists, while freshman Tayelor McCalister tallied five points, two boards, an assist, and a steal.

The Titans never got into a flow offensively in the first half, ending with 11 turnovers in the stanza. Sophomore Audrey Matteson hit a trey to knot the game at 3-all early and Brown tied it at 5-all with a pair of free throws, but the Phoenix went on a 9-2 run after that to take a 14-7 lead. A free throw by McCalister and a layup by freshman Rosanna Reynolds cut that deficit to just four, but Green Bay responded with a three.

McCalister then brought UDM within a basket at 17-14 with two quick drives to the rim, but the Phoenix ended the first half on a 11-0 run over the final six minutes to take a 28-14 advantage into the break.

The Titans came out inspired in the second half, but just could not get into their offensive rhythm as the Phoenix continued to build on its lead.

Detroit ended the game 11-of-41 from the field and 3-of-22 from beyond the arc. Green Bay was held to just 5-of-20 from three, but ended the game shooting 50.0% from the field (26-of-52).

The Titans will continue their three-game road swing to start conference play on Saturday when they head to Cleveland State. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m., and will be part of a Titan doubleheader in Cleveland as the men will play the Vikings right after at 4:30.

Game Notes: Detroit is 14-13 all-time in Horizon League openers... Detroit is now 2-20 all-time in Green Bay… UDM ended Green Bay's school record 40-game regular season winning streak last year with a 70-58 victory on Feb. 9, 2012 at the Kress Event Center… The 31 points were the lowest scored by the Titans since they had 31 at #18/18 Minnesota in 2004…Brown is now 69 away from reaching 1000 points, and she is on pace to be the quickest Titan to 1,000… Brown saw a streak of 32-straight games in double figures come to an end as the last time she was held to single digits was on Dec. 31, 2011, when she had eight in a win over Valparaiso…The last time UDM had only 11 field goals was on Dec. 6, 2011, at Michigan State… The Titans were outrebounded by a team for the first time this season…Shayok is now 20 rebounds away from 1,000, and she would be the second Titan in school history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds (Cheryl Williams, 1978-82).
