Own Goal Aids Titans in Overtime Win over Green Bay

Box Score

DETROIT (10/12/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team was looking for a Horizon League victory and it came in the 93rd minute with an own goal against the Green Bay Phoenix Saturday as the Titans won 1-0 in overtime.

Senior Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, Ont./St. Ignatius) crossed the ball from the left side of the 18-yard box and then watched as the ball went off a Green Bay defender and into the net at 92:50 for the lone goal of the match.

"Kaitlyn made it happen. Even though it was a goal that had a little bit of luck to it, she did get around the player and she was aggressive. We have been telling our forwards that if you are aggressive good things will happen," said UDM head coach Mike Lupenec. "These are the type of wins that get you going. We could have been 0-3 and instead we are 1-2 and back in the hunt. We have to take it one game at a time."

The win helped Detroit (7-6-1, 1-2 Horizon League) improve to 5-0 at home this season. It was also the team's ninth straight win at Titan Field. UDM is now 22-5-2 in its last 29 home games dating back to the start of the 2010 season.

"Early in the game, Green Bay had most of the play with a lot of corner kicks and our girls deserve credit for defending them well," added Lupenec. "We were very consistent today defensively and the girls battled and covered each other. They didn't give Green Bay any real good scoring opportunities."

Detroit and Green Bay (4-5-1, 1-2 Horizon League) each controlled possession with each having offensive opportunities in the first half. Despite the control, the teams went into the break with a 0-0 score.

Green Bay had an advantage in total shots by a 3-2 margin and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks in the opening frame. Detroit came back with a 5-2 edge in shots in the second and finished with a 7-5 advantage overall.

UDM sophomore goalkeeper Martha Dunbar (Burlington, Ont./Nelson) had two saves in the first half and did not have to make another save the rest of the way in recording her fourth shutout of the season.

Prior to the game, the 2012 Horizon League regular season championship banner was unveiled at Titan Field by this year's co-captains in Victoria Sollestre (West Bloomfield, Mich./Marian), Quarrell, Abby McCollum (La Salle, Mich./Monroe), and Alyssa Riley (Whitby, Ont./Father Leo J. Austin). Detroit earned a share of the title in 2012 after a 5-2 HL record and entered the postseason tournament as the No. 2 seed with Milwaukee taking the top spot based on tiebreakers.

Detroit will host Wright State Wednesday at Titan Field at 3:00 p.m. The Titans will be wearing pink to honor breast cancer.
