Multi-Goal Effort from Borawski Lifts Titans Over Raiders

Box Score

DETROIT (10/16/2013) -- Sophomore Jennifer Borawski scored two goals to lead the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Wright State Raiders at Titan Field on Wednesday afternoon in the annual "Pink Out" game in honor of breast cancer awareness. It was the third straight win for UDM and the tenth straight at Titan Field.

Borawski recorded the first multi-point game of her career with the two goals. Freshman Carley Rice assisted on both goals and junior defender Alyssa Lotito helped on the second. For Rice, it was the first two collegiate points of her career and she picked a great time to help the offense as UDM (8-6-1, 2-2 Horizon League) has three regular season games remaining, all within the conference, and is in the thick of the Horizon League standings and could be tied for third by the end of the night depending on the Youngstown State at Cleveland State contest this evening. Wright State (5-5-4, 2-1-1 Horizon League) still sits in second place despite today's loss.

UDM is now 6-0 at Titan Field this year outscoring opponents 20-0. Dating back to the start of the 2010 season, Detroit is 23-5-2 in 30 games outscoring opponents 71-11 in that time. The Titans tied a single-season best in 2012 with a 7-2 home record equaling the win total set in 1995 when Detroit was 7-0. The Titans have also 14 of their last 15 at home.

It was the second straight regular season win for Detroit over Wright State but the Raiders have still captured six of the last eight games between the two programs.

Borawski's first goal came in the 41st minute as Rice passed a nice ball to Borawski and her shot found the back of the net for her third of the year.

Borawski's second of the game was off a nice passing play. Lotito took a pass from Rice and Lotito passed a long ball from the right side of the 18-yard box and Borawski put it home for her second of the day at 55:47. For Lotito it was her Horizon League-leading ninth assist of the season and she was 19th in the nation in total assists in the latest NCAA statistics release on Monday.

UDM sophomore goalkeeper Martha Dunbar made key saves at opportune moments to keep the Raiders off the scoreboard. Dunbar finished the game with eight saves, five in the second half, recording her fifth shutout of the year.

Wright State held a 15-9 overall shooting advantage and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Titans wore pink socks and laces in honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Karmanos Cancer Institute is a local organization in Detroit and a partner of the Susan G. Komen organization and was present throughout the game. Donations are not necessary, but are always encouraged.  Breast cancer is an international struggle with somebody somewhere in the world dying as a result of breast cancer every 74 seconds. Detroit will head to Oakland on Saturday evening to play the Grizzlies at 7:00 p.m. under the lights.
