Oakland Shuts Out the Titans 2-0

Box Score

DETROIT (10/19/2013) -- The Oakland Golden Grizzlies played to a 2-0 win over the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team Saturday evening at OU Soccer Field in the first ever Horizon League meeting between the two teams.

Oakland (7-7-1, 3-2 Horizon League) took an early 1-0 lead over Detroit (8-7-1, 2-3 Horizon League) converting on a penalty kick just 2:43 into the game.

"Late in the game we tried to push up to get the equalizer and it punished us with the second goal," said UDM head coach Mike Lupenec. "Overall our effort was good but we have to learn to be ready early in the game."

The Titans did generate opportunities in the first half including a cross from sophomore Jennifer Borawski from the right side that was played into freshman Kristen Tobin in the box but a high shot in the 34th minute kept Detroit scoreless.

Each team had four shots in the opening half with the only one on goal coming from Oakland on the penalty kick.

The Golden Grizzlies increased their lead to 2-0 with 14:03 left in the second half on a nice passing play inside the 18-yard box at 75:57.

The Titans kept trying to come back with the best chance coming from junior Alyssa Riley who had a great diving header on a cross from senior Kaitlyn Quarrell in the 85th minute that was just saved by the Oakland goalkeeper.

Oakland finished with a 13-9 overall shooting advantage, 5-3 on goal, and the Grizzlies also had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

"The thing we have to do is learn from this game and move forward because we still have two battles left that are winnable games and in this conference, anybody can beat anybody on any given day," said Lupenec.

With the win, Oakland moves into third place and Detroit sits in a three-way tie for fifth place with Cleveland State and Youngstown State and two regular season games remaining. UDM fell 2-0 to Cleveland State earlier this year and has yet to play Youngstown State.

Detroit will host Valparaiso on Sat. Oct. 26 to wrap up the 2013 home schedule. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. and UDM will honor its three seniors, Abby McCollum, Quarrell, and Ashley Welch, prior to the game. The final contest of the regular season for the Titans will be on Nov. 1 at Youngstown State.
