Last Time Out
The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team finished its week 1-1, picking up a victory over in-state Western Michigan (W 2-0) before falling to Green Bay (L 0-2).
In the Titan's first match of the week against Western Michigan, senior
Adam Bedell tallied his third multi-goal game of the season, while co-captain
Matt Ybarra assisted on both for a career-high two goals.
In the second contest of the week for UDM at Aldo Santage Stadium, home of the Phoenix of Green Bay, UDM dropped a 2-0 Horizon League match on a chilly Saturday. After testing Steinwascher early, Green Bay's Brandon Hall was able to find the back of the net from a deflected corner kick to put the Phoenix on the scoreboard first in the 43rd minute.
On a bizarre play during the second half, as Steinwascher was bouncing the ball after making a save on goal a Phoenix player tapped the ball before Steinwascher was able to get his hands on it again. Green Bay's AJ Patterson floated a pass to Sam Krenzien for Green Bay's second goal of the match.
For Three
After Detroit's 2-0 victory on Oct. 15 over Western Michigan, UDM racked up its third consecutive non-conference victory, defeating IPFW (W 3-1) and Bowling Green (W 2-1) in its previous two out of conference contests.
Matty Ice
Junior co-captain,
Matt Ybarra is what you would call a "glue guy." He is not always a numbers guy, but has been a contributor since stepping on campus and the Irvine, Calif. native does whatever is necessary for the Titan squad. In UDM's match against Western Michigan, Ybarra posted a career-high two assists in a 2-0 win over the Broncos. He currently leads the team in assists with four which is tied for seventh in the league standings.
Bedell's Finding His Groove
Adam Bedell, the 2012 Horizon League Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, finished last season with 11 goals, five assist and 27 points. However, to begin the 2013 season the senior captain was having a tough time finding the net despite taking seven shots on goal on 17 shots through the first five games of the season.
Since a 20 yard free kick found the back of the net against Buffalo, Bedell has scored goals in eight of the last nine games for the Titans, including a trio of mutli-goal games against Buffalo, IPFW and Western Michigan. Currently, Bedell is tied for second in the Horizon League in both goals (8) and points (19).
The co-captain is also continuing his way up the Detroit men's soccer career record book in several different categories:

First Time for Everything
A trio of Titans have found the back of the net for the first time in their collegiate careers this season. Junior defender,
Trevor Flynn scored his first collegiate goal off a header in the Titan's 1-1 draw with Cornell on Sept. 6. Freshman
Zachary Atwood scored his first goal in dramatic fashion, sending a laser past the Bowling Green keeper for the game-tying goal just before the half and freshman
Tyler Moorman headed in a corner in a 5-3 loss to Milwaukee.
STOP! In The Name of Sarge
Steinwascher was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 9 after his performances against Cornell and Robert Morris. Referred to as "Sarge" by his teammates, junior goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher has retaken command of his net.
Through eleven games, Steinwascher has placed himself in the top 20 in two different categories nationally. Through Oct. 13, the junior goalkeeper is tied for 11th in the nation in saves per game (5.67), while ranking fourth in the country in total saves (68).
Lucky 13
There will be plenty of new faces on the field for the 2013 Titans, 13 to be exact. Detroit will add 13 newcomers to this year's squad, with 12 of the 13 new additions hailing from the home state of Michigan and a lone ranger from Missouri.
Scouting the Vikings
The Vikings defeated Bowling Green in an exciting 1-0 double overtime win on Wednesday night (Oct. 16) at Bowling Green. Sergio Manesio scored the game-winning goal for CSU, giving him a team-high four goals. Senior Admir Suljevic set up Manesio with his third assist of the season.
The Series with Cleveland State
Detroit leads the all-time series with the Vikings 15-8-1. In the Sept. 22 meeting last season on Titan Field,
Adam Bedell scored two goals and Matt Nedwicki added another to lead the Titans to a 3-1 victory over Cleveland State to send UDM to 2-0 in the Horizon League.
On Deck for the Titans
UDM will wrap up its nonconference schedule with a trip to the Sunshine State to take on the Bulls of South Florida on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at Corbett Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.
