Started From The Bottom Now We Here
The Titans were selected to finished fourth in the 2013 Horizon League Preseason Coaches' Poll. Last season, Detroit was selected to finish dead last, but ended the season being crowned Horizon League regular season champions for the first time since 2005 after defeating UIC 2-1.
Last Time Out
Jason Leslie scored his second consecutive goal for an early 1-0 lead, but the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 Horizon League match against rival Oakland Saturday night at OU Soccer Field.
The Grizzlies came out more aggressive in the second half, closing the gap in shots. In the 66th minute some misjudgment by the back line of the Titans left Joey Tinnion free to even the match at 1-1.??Shortly after the Grizzlies goal, Leslie was one on one with the Oakland keeper, but could not win the battle that would have gave UDM the go ahead goal and OU took advantage as Tinnion was left alone to put it the game winning goal, as the Grizzlies took the match 2-1 at OU Soccer.
(Les)lie Is More
Jason Leslie has been a bright spot for the Titans lately. The sophomore has sparked UDM off the bench, and has found the net in the Titans past two contests against IPFW and Oakland. In the match against IPFW, Leslie entered the second half and chipped a shot over the keeper on his first touch for the game-winning goal. Against Oakland in the following match, Leslie scored the lone goal for the Titans in a 2-1 defeat.
Bedell's Finding His Groove
Adam Bedell, the 2012 Horizon League Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, finished last season with 11 goals, five assist and 27 points.
However, to begin the 2013 season the senior captain was having a tough time finding the net despite getting seven shots on goal on 17 shots through the first five games of the season.
Since a 20 yard free kick found the back of the net against Buffalo, Bedell has scored five goals in the last four games for the Titans, including two mutli-goal games against Buffalo and IPFW.
STOP! In The Name of Sarge
Steinwascher was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week after his performances against Cornell and Robert Morris. Referred to as "Sarge" by his teammates, junior goalkeeper
Nathan Steinwascher has retaken command of his net.
Through 10 games, Steinwascher has placed himself in the top 20 in two different categories nationally. Through Oct. 6, the junior goalkeeper is tied for 15th in the nation in saves per game (5.40), while tied for ninth in total saves (54).
Lucky 13
There will be plenty of new faces on the field for the 2013 Titans, 13 to be exact. Detroit will add 13 newcomers to this year's squad, with 12 of the 13 new additions hailing from the home state of Michigan and a lone ranger from Missouri.
Scouting Bowling Green
The Falcons are 2-4-4 on the season, and BGSU is 1-1-0 in MAC play after Friday's (Oct. 4) 1-0 win at Buffalo. The Brown and Orange will take a three-match unbeaten streak into Tuesday's Detroit match, having battled to a pair of double-overtime draws at Marshall (1-1, Sept. 27) and Northern Kentucky (0-0, Sept. 29) prior to facing the Bulls.
The Falcons have eight goals on the season, scored by eight different players. That group includes seniors Ryan Comiskey, Joey D'Agostino, Anthony Grant, Brandon Silva and Ryan Snashall, junior Danny Baraldi, sophomore Ryan James and freshman Joe Sullivan.
The Series with the Falcons
The home team has not won a match in the series since 2007, as BG captured victories in the Motor City in 2010 and '11, and the teams battled to a 3-3 tie in 2008. The Falcons are 8-3-1 at home and 8-4-1 on the road vs. the Titans through the years.
Detroit trails the all-time series with Bowling Green, 7-16-2. However, the Titans have been victorious in the last two matches against the Falcons, including a 2-0 victory on Sept. 18 when the teams met last season in Bowling Green, Ohio. Since 2007, the road team has come out as the victor in the series.
On Deck for the Titans
UDM will be home this weekend as the Titans host UIC for a Horizon League match on Saturday, Oct. 12 on Titan Field. The UDM women's soccer team will be the first match of the Saturday doubleheader, as they take on Green Bay. Match time is set for 1 p.m. ET and the men's match will begin approximately 30 minutes after.
