KALAMAZOO, Mich. (11/14/2013) -- It was a high-scoring contest right from the start and despite 20+ point-performances from both
Senee Shearer and junior
Ellisha Crosby, the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team fell on the road at Western Michigan, 103-86, on Thursday night.
Shearer tallied a career-best 29 points on 9-of-17 from the field, including four 3-pointers, and Crosby posted a season-high 23 points and her second double-double of the year with 12 rebounds.
It was all offense right from the start as three treys by Shearer and five points from Crosby early gave Detroit (1-2) a 16-15 lead not even five minutes into the game. The Broncos (2-1) then went on a 24- 4 run over the next eight minutes to open a 19-point advantage, 39-20.
WMU still had a big lead, 46-28, with 5:23 left when the Titans began pecking away at that deficit closing to within nine, 50-41, with over a minute left in the first half before trailing at the break, 54-43. Shearer was the catalyst in that spurt with six points and sophomore
Tayelor McCalister had a big play with a steal and fast-break layup to make it a nine-point game at the 1:32 mark.
The Broncos extended the lead to 15, 58-43, early in the second period, but a quick 8-2 charge cut that to single digits. Shearer had a three-point play and that was followed by a trifecta from Crosby. McCalister then grabbed a rebound and freshman
Lizzy Connors was able to get inside to make it a 60-51 contest.
The home team once again was able to stop the Titan comeback and get the lead back to as many as 15, but a basket from rookie
Reyna Montgomery and then and an offensive rebound and put back by freshman
Megan Galloway had the red, white and blue trailing by just eight, 73-65, with 11:45 remaining. After a free throw by WMU, McCalister drove to the rim for a score and the Titans were down by just seven, 74-67, with 11:08 left.
From that point, Western Michigan went on a 12-2 run to open the game back up and UDM was not able to muster one last run.
McCalister finished with a career-high 12 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Montgomery had five points and three boards, while Galloway tallied six points and six rebounds.
UDM was 31-of-70 from the field and collected nine steals, but Western Michigan was 34-of-77 shooting and 25-of-27 at the free throw line.
Detroit will have a quick turnaround as the Titans get ready for a visit from Michigan on Saturday, Nov. 16. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m., and the contest will be televised live on WADL.
