DETROIT (12/30/2013) -- Senior
Senee Shearer set a career mark with seven 3-pointers and senior
Megan Hatter poured in a career-best 26 points, but that was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team fell to Madonna, 86-76, on Monday night at Calihan Hall.
Â
Shearer did not start but came off the bench to net 26 points, hitting 7-of-20 from behind the arc, tying her career high with seven rebounds and adding two assists and two steals. It was also her eighth-straight game with 20 points, a new school record.
Â
Hatter was 8-of-17 from the field with seven boards and three assists as she reached double digits for the sixth-straight game as well as reaching 20 for the second time in her career.
Â
The Titans (3-10) trailed by as many as 15 early in the second half, but Detroit was able to cut that to nine, 44-35, with six-straight points as freshman
Reyna Montgomery and Hatter each had the old fashioned three-point plays. Â Madonna then went back up by 12, 49-37, before back-to-back treys by Hatter and Shearer made it a six-point game, 49-43, with 14:12 left.
Â
Madonna (6-8) answered with a three ball, something the Crusaders did all game long as they hit 12 on the night and always at crucial times. The visitors were able to work their lead back to double digits, 57-45, but a 9-2 Titan run got UDM within five, 59-54, midway through the second period as Hatter netted five points in that stretch.
Â
Detroit was able to get back within five two more times, 61-56, and 67-62, but Madonna was able to hold off the Titan charge as the red, white and blue could not get any closer for the comeback.Â
Â
Sophomore
DaVonna Bradford finished with a career-high 10 points and nine rebounds, while Montgomery and freshman
Megan Galloway had four apiece.
Â
The Titans were 24-of-65 (36.9%) and 10-of-32 from three, while Madonna was 28-of-52 (53.8%) and 12-of-29 from long range.
Â
Madonna came out on fire in the first half as the Crusaders hit seven from down town en route to a 42-29 lead at the half. Detroit trailed from the start as Madonna took a 2-0 lead and then ran off five straight for a 7-2 advantage.
Â
The Titans later trailed by 10, 17-7, but a 9-3 spurt by Detroit made it a four-point game, 20-16. UDM still had it at a four-point deficit at 28-24, but another Crusaders' run, this time 12-3, put the red, white and blue down by 13, 40-27, right before the break.
Â
Detroit will now get ready for Horizon League play as the Titans open their conference schedule on Sunday, Jan. 5, at Wright State. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
