DETROIT (2/1/13) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team won its third-straight game Friday night on ESPNU with an 88-77 topping of Youngstown State at Calihan Hall. The win puts Detroit solely in second place in the Horizon League, only a half a game behind Valparaiso for first.

Senior forward Nick Minnerath led Detroit (15-8, 7-3 HL) with a game-high 27 points, while junior Ray McCallum added 23 and Jason Calliste pitched in 16. Doug Anderson also scored in double figures with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

UDM led at the half, 42-40, before outscoring the Penguins, 46-37, in the second stanza, to improve to 11-2 at home.

After a layup from Damian Eargle tied the score, 44-44, with 18:12 left, the Titans went on a 7-0 run to build a lead they would not relinquish. The Penguins trimmed Detroit's lead to 51-49 with 15:05 left, but that was as close as the score would get as Minnerath responded with back-to-back layups to put the Titans back up by six, 55-49, with 14 minutes remaining. Both teams swapped baskets for the next 10 minutes, including three-pointers from Calliste and Kamren Belin to make the score 70-65, before Detroit built its largest lead of the game 81-69 with two minutes left.

Detroit opened the game by making six of its first eight shots to build a 14-5 lead at the 16-minute mark. The Penguins then responded with a 7-0 run to trim the lead to 14-12, before the Titans answered back with a 5-0 run to lead 19-12 with 12 minutes left. Youngstown State would respond with a 15-6 run over the next five minutes to take the lead 27-25, but Detroit was able to close the half with a 17-13 run to take a 42-40 lead into the locker room. McCallum led all scorers with 18 points in the first half on 7-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-4 from downtown, while Minnerath had 14 points.

The Titans ended the game shooting 47.8 percent (32-67) from the field, including 45 percent (9-20) from downtown, while Youngstown State shot 46.6 percent (27-58) overall.
