GREEN BAY, Wis. (2/9/13) – Junior guard
Ray McCallum scored a season-high 30 points, but it wasn't enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team's four game win streak was snapped with a 68-59 loss to Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at the Resch Center.
McCallum finished the day with 30 points on 12-of-19 shooting, while grabbing five rebounds to go along with four steals, two assists, and one blocked shot to lead Detroit (16-9, 8-4 HL), while classmate
Jason Calliste pitched in 14 points, two assists, and two steals.
Doug Anderson finished with nine points and six rebounds for the Titans, while
Nick Minnerath grabbed a team-high seven boards to go along with four points.
UDM led at the half, 33-30, before being outscored by the Phoenix, 38-26, in the second stanza.
Detroit held a 48-46 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation, before the Phoenix closed the game with a 22-11 run. The Titans trimmed the lead to six, 62-56, with 2:57 left, before Green Bay (13-12, 7-5 HL) forced back-to-back Titan turnovers, for a pair of easy buckets followed by a pair of free throws to build its largest lead of the game 68-57.
Detroit opened the game with an alley-oop to Anderson after winning the tip, and took a 11-5 lead into the first timeout. The Titans then extended their lead to 15-8, their largest of the game, with 12:59 left, before Green Bay answered back with a 10-2 run to take its first lead of the game 18-17. McCallum then drained a three-pointer on the Titans' ensuing possession to give Detroit the lead 20-18 with 8:40 left. Both teams would then exchange baskets, before a put back dunk from
Ugochukwu Njoku gave Detroit a 33-30 lead heading into the locker room. McCallum led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, while Calliste had nine.
The Titans ended the game shooting 40.7 percent (22-54) from the field, including 27.8 percent (5-18) from downtown, while Green Bay shot 43.1 percent (22-51) overall, including 46.2 percent from beyond the arc (6-13).
Keifer Sykes finished with 16 points, 13 in the second half, to lead Green Bay, while Jordan Fouse added 12 and Kam Cerroni pitched in 11.
Detroit will return home on Tuesday, Feb. 12 when the Titans welcome Cleveland State to Calihan Hall. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN3.
