LOUISVILLE, Ky. (3/5/2013) -- Sophomore
Chris Kelly made a career-high 14 saves and sophomore
Mike Birney recorded three points, but a six-goal second period by Bellarmine was too much to overcome as the Titans fell, 10-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Birney, along with sophomore
Scott Drummond and freshmen
Ryan Callaghan and
Nick Melucci, each found the back of the net on the day. Birney's two assists led Detroit (0-5), while junior
Alex Maini and sophomore
Brandon Beauregard each came away with a helper.
Redshirt freshman
Damien Hicks was a season-best 8-of-13 on faceoffs with a game-high seven ground balls, while senior
Jamie Hebden and
Jordan Houtby each had a pair of caused turnovers.
The game was tied 1-1 at the end of one as Callaghan took a pass from Birney and knotted it up with about four minutes left on his first collegiate goal. It was in the second period that Bellarmine (4-1) took control firing 15 shots in the 15 minutes of play and outscoring Detroit 6-1 in the second to take a 7-2 lead at the break. Kelly stood strong with seven saves in the period and the lone Titan goal was from Birney with an assist from Maini.
Drummond had the tally in the third as Birney recorded his career-best second helper and Melucci netted his first collegiate marker in the fourth with some help from Beauregard.
Hebden also had four ground balls, while Kelly and junior
Drew Schupbach picked up three apiece. The Titans were just edged in shooting, 35-33, and lost the battle on ground balls, 33-26.
Detroit will now have 11 days off before heading into conference play next Saturday, Mar. 16, when UDM visits Marist. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
