DETROIT (8/17/2013) -- The University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team hosted its annual day of alumni festivities on Saturday afternoon at Titan Field that brought back soccer players from all years back to campus.
Former players and their families and friends along with coaches, staff, and current players all took to the field on Saturday afternoon in a day of celebration. The 2013 season is the 21st in the history of the program and Mike Lupenec has been the head coach for every single year.
"This is always a day I look forward to because girls who have been a big part of our program come back and we get to visit and see them return with their families and see how they are doing," said Lupenec.
The day started with a scrimmage featuring the alumni team, coached by assistant Jamie Huff, against the current varsity team coached by Lupenec. Freshman Kristen Tobin and senior Abby McCollum both scored for the varsity Titans who finished with a 2-0 victory. Sophomore Chauné Rael-Whitsitt assisted on Tobin's goal while freshman Anna Mindling assisted on McCollum's tally.
The alumni team was able to keep it close as Tobin's goal came just before the close of the first half and McCollum's goal being scored soon after the second half of play started.
Sophomore Martha Dunbar played goalkeeper for the varsity team earning the shutout while freshman Laura Taylor tended the nets for the alumni squad.
Following the game, everybody headed to the pavilion at the James K. Campbell Complex for food, drinks, and the opportunity for everyone to talk about women's soccer at Detroit.
Lupenec took the microphone and thanked everyone for coming and then UDM Director of Athletics Robert Vowels did the same saying a few words to the alumni and family in attendance.
"It is always great to see so many people come out to this event and it is a great time to talk about the past and the successes that we have had," said Lupenec.
The Titans will open the 2013 season this Friday at Eastern Michigan at 5:00 p.m.
