CLEVELAND, Ohio (9/28/2013) -- The Cleveland State Vikings won a tough 2-0 match over the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team in the Horizon League opener for both schools on Saturday at the Krenzler Soccer Field in Cleveland.
"Conference games are all about competing and we didn't compete today," said UDM head coach
Mike Lupenec. "You are going to have those types of games and we just have to move forward and prepare for our next one."
Detroit (5-5-1) started early with some aggressive play and it led to a few great shot opportunities. The best came with back-to-back corner kicks in the first five minutes, which resulted in a header attempt on goal from freshman
Anna Mindling. Junior
Alyssa Lotito took both corners and on the second one, she played a ball to Mindling that was saved by the CSU goalie.
Despite having control of possession in the first half, the Vikings (7-4-1) took the lead as a free kick eluded UDM sophomore goalkeeper
Martha Dunbar with 20:11 left in the opening stanza.
The Vikings added another goal in the 59th minute as a defensive lapse led to a CSU offensive opportunity and a 2-0 lead. Cleveland State made a play inside the left side of the 18-yard box and Amanda Sivic kicked the ball across the crease and into the right corner of the net.
The game finished with an overall 14-7 shot advantage for the Titans as well as a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Titans will head to Milwaukee for another Horizon League contest against the Panthers next Saturday with game time set for 5:00 p.m. (ET).
